  • Oil and gas are the most important non-renewable sources of energy. Exploring, producing and managing these resources in compliance with HSE standards are challenging tasks. New technologies, workflows and procedures have to be implemented. This book deals with some of these themes and describes some of the advanced technologies related to the oil and gas industry from HSE to field management issues. Some new technologies for geo-modeling, transient well testing and digital rock physics are also introduced. There are many more technical topics to be addressed in future books.

  • This book is based onmy notes fromlectures to students of electrical, elec- tronic, and computer engineering at South Bank University. It presents a first year degree/diploma course in engineering mathematics with an emphasis on important concepts, such as algebraic structure, symme- tries, linearity, and inverse problems, clearly presented in an accessible style. It encompasses the requirements, not only of students with a good maths grounding, but also of those who, with enthusiasm and motiva- tion, can make up the necessary knowledge.

  • The aim of this chapter is to summarize and evaluate the different mechanisms and catabolic mediators involved in cancer cachexia and ageing sarcopenia since they may represent targets for future promising clinical investigations. Cancer cachexia is a syndrome characterized by a marked weight loss, anorexia, asthenia and anemia. In fact, many patients who die with advanced cancer suffer from cachexia. The degree of cachexia is inversely correlated with the survival time of the patient and it always implies a poor prognosis.

  • In an attempt to glean potential trends, this study divides the subjects of the 641 filings into categories based in part on their occupation and in part on their relation- ship to the insurance or investment product involved in the transaction. The data is derived from several sources on the SAR-SF: the narrative section (Part VI), Field 7 (“Occupation or Type of Business”), and Field 19 (“Is this individual/business associated/ affiliated with the reporting financial institution?”). The study characterizes the subjects based on their relationship to the insurance products.

  • This volume consists of an introduction and two groups of essays by Paul M. Postal, each with a connecting theme. The first, positive group of papers, contains five previously unpublished studies of English syntax. These include a long study of so-called "locative inversion," two investigations related to raising to non-subject status, an argument for the existence of a hitherto ignored nominal grammatical category and a study of vulgar negative polarity items. Each investigation of specific English details is argued to have significant theoretical consequences....

  • The problems of smog formation are exacerbated by a meteorological phenomenon known as thermal inversion. Under normal atmospheric conditions, warm air in the vicinity of a large city is trapped by an overlayer of cool air. Since warm gases tend to rise, they normally diffuse upward and disperse the smog and other pollutants. A thermal inversion occurs when the upper layer is a layer of warm air, while the polluted air near the ground is relatively cool. In such a situation, the pollutant-laden cool air cannot rise and disperse.

  • Arsenic is a strong stimulus of heme oxygenase (HO)-1 expression in experimental studies in response to oxidative stress caused by a stimulus. A functional GT-repeat polymorphism in the HO-1 gene promoter was inversely correlated to the development of coronary artery disease in diabetics and development of restenosis following angioplasty in patients. The role of this potential vascular protective factor in carotid atherosclerosis remains unclear. We previously reported a graded association of arsenic...

  • Using count data on the number of bank failures in US states during the 1960 to 2006 period, this paper endeavors to establish how far sources of economic risk (recessions, high interest rates, in ation) or di erences in solvency and branching regulation can explain some of the fragility in banking. Assuming that variables are predetermined, lagged values provide instruments to absorb potential endogeneity between the number of bank failures and economic and regulatory conditions.

  • In the last 20 years, a number of epidemiological studies have shown that tumor formation and incidence of cardiovascular diseases are inversely related to the intake of fruit and vegetables (Verhoeven et al., 1996). One group of vegetables that has been widely approved for its benefi cial effects on human health are the vegetables from the family Brassicaceae (= Cruciferae). The family Brassicaceae is a large group, having about 3000 species in 350 genera, including several types of edible plants, which are sometimes referred to as “the cabbage family.

  • Defining the Extent of Disease and the Prognosis The first priority in patient management after the diagnosis of cancer is established and shared with the patient is to determine the extent of disease. The curability of a tumor usually is inversely proportional to the tumor burden. Ideally, the tumor will be diagnosed before symptoms develop or as a consequence of screening efforts (Chap. 78). A very high proportion of such patients can be cured.

  • Principles of Chemotherapy Medical oncology is the subspecialty of internal medicine that cares for and designs treatment approaches to patients with cancer, in conjunction with surgical and radiation oncologists. The core skills of the medical oncologist include the use of drugs that may have a beneficial effect on the natural history of the patient's illness or favorably influence the patient's quality of life. In general, the curability of a tumor is inversely related to tumor volume and directly related to drug dose.

  • Finally, the HPDD sheds light on one of the leading issues of the day: the relationship between debt and growth. Separating countries into fast-, medium-, or slow–paced growers over 1885–2009, we find an intuitive pattern. 15 Fast growers consistently registered low debt ratios, while slow growers carried the highest debts for much of the sample period (Figure 7, upper panel). Further light is shed on the debt-growth relationship by a bubble chart that compares debt ratios and (total) PPP GDP (Figure 7, lower panel).
