  • Much of the convenience of modern life resides in sheet metal, the cowling shield of most machines and appliances. However, the load that this takes off human shoulders has to be carried elsewhere, and the Earth has borne the burden. Many of us woke up to the environmental cost when over a century of industrialization finally surpassed the capacity of nature to assimilate it. International in scope, Heavy Metals in the Environment: Using Wetlands for Their Removal discusses wetland functions and heavy metal contamination.

  • In Salah – In Salah Gas is a joint venture between BP (33 percent), Sonatrach (35 percent) and Statoil (32 percent). The project comprises a phased development of eight gas fields located in the Ahnet-Timimoun Basin in Algerian Central Sahara. The initial development focuses on the exploitation of the gas reserves in the three northern fields. These gas fields contain CO2 concentrations ranging from one to nine percent, which is above the export gas specification of 0.3 percent and, therefore, requires CO2 removal facilities.

  • Combustion units (process furnaces, steam boilers and gas turbines) give rise to emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide and particulates. Nitrogen oxide emissions are most commonly reduced by combustion modifications that reduce temperatures and hence the formation of thermal NOx. The techniques include low NOx burners, flue gas recirculation, and reduced pre-heat. Nitrogen oxides can also be removed after they have formed by reduction to nitrogen using Selective Non Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) or Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). Water pollutant control.
