  • This book provides an interdisciplinary view of how to prepare the ecological and socio-economic systems to the reality of climate change. Scientifically sound tools are needed to predict its effects on regional, rather than global, scales, as it is the level at which socio-economic plans are designed and natural ecosystem reacts. The first section of this book describes a series of methods and models to downscale the global predictions of climate change, estimate its effects on biophysical systems and monitor the changes as they occur....

  • Australia is founding its future on science and innovation. Its national science agency, CSIRO, is a powerhouse of ideas, technologies and skills. CSIRO initiated the National Research Flagships to address Australia’s major research challenges and opportunities. They apply large scale, long term, multidisciplinary science and aim for widespread adoption of solutions. The Flagship Collaboration Fund supports the best and brightest researchers to address these complex challenges through partnerships between CSIRO, universities, research agencies and industry....

  • In 1899, the famous American psychologist, William James published a little book called Talks to Teachers , in which he sought to explain how to apply psychology to education — that is, he sought to use what he called “ the science of the mind ’ s workings ” to generate practical advice for classroom teachers. At the time, the book was not much of a success, largely for two reasons: (a) there was a lack of research evidence on how learning works (that is, the science of learning), and (b) there was a lack of research - based principles concerning how to help people learn (that is,...

  • As email marketing continues to mature, and digital communications expand, organizations need to become even more strategic in email campaign implementation, to deliver value on subscriber’s terms. To accomplish this goal, email marketers must exceed the rising expectations of email subscribers and ISPs. Subscribers demand organizations speak to their unique interests and communication preferences. Because of overcrowded inboxes, consumers also seek new, more efficient tools with which to review emails.

  • The Society of Wetland Scientists’ book series, Global Change Ecology and Wetlands, emerged from the Society’s Global Change Ecology Section. There is a growing need among wetlands managers and scientists to address problems of climate change in wetlands, and this series will fi ll an important literature gap in the fi eld of global change as it relates to wetlands around the world.

  • Environmental health decision making can be a complex undertaking, as there is the need to navigate and find balance among three core elements: science, policy, and the needs of the American public. Much of environmental health decision making started in the 1950s and 1960s and was focused on health effects of simple environmental exposures. However, scientific knowledge has rapidly changed as new technologies and new insights into the complexity of environment–health interactions have emerged.

  • Understanding the origins of humanity has long been one of our foremost intellectual pursuits, and one that greatly interests the general public as evidenced by museum attendance and by numerous media productions and general interest publications. Progress toward an improved understanding of our heritage is a continuing challenge for the scientific community, requiring advances in a range of disciplines that include archaeology, anthropology, geology, biology, oceanography, and genetics, and particularly research advances in areas where two or more of these fields intersect.

  • SWAT model was used to assess the impacts of climate change on the streamflow of Ben Hai River Basin. The daily streamflow for 1979 - 1996 and 1997 - 2006 was used to calibrate and validate the SWAT model, respectively. Nash efficiency values for the daily comparison were 0.72 for the calibration period and 0.74 for the validation period. Three scenarios were analyzed relative to the baseli ne with 28-year time series. A doubling of the atmospheric C02 content to 660 ppm (while holding other climatic variables) resulted in a 7.

  • In the framework of the program "Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network" funded by Rockefeller Foundation, Vietnam Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environment carried out this study with the aim to strongly support the development of action plan to respond to climate change for Quy Nhon city. The study developed climate change (temperature and rainfall) and sea level rise scenarios corresponding to some key emission scenarios, namely A1FI, A2 and B2. Impacts of climate change on main sectors such as water resources, agriculture and tourism were also assessed.

  • Climate change (CC) is a global problem that not only affects the developed countries but also the developing ones as Vietnam. With a coastal line of approximately 3,260 km, Vietnam is expected to be affected considerably by climate change including salinity intrusion. Through the assessment of impacts of climate change on water resource in Hong-Thai Binh and Dong Nai river basins which located in two key economic zones, in the paper a general picture of impacts of climate change on salinity intrusion in Vietnam is presented, where MIKE 11 was used for Hong – Thai Binh basin and HydroGIS...

  • ‘Climate models’ is a very broad topic, so a single volume can only offer a small sampling of relevant research activities. This volume of 14 chapters includes descriptions of a variety of modeling studies for a variety of geographic regions by an international roster of authors. The climate research community generally uses the rubric ‘climate models’ to refer to organized sets of computer instructions that produce simulations of climate evolution.

  • Vietnam-Chinese transboundary river basins play an important role in socio-economic development for both Vietnam and China. The cooperative research on assessment of climate change impact on water resources is necessary in order to maintain and develop water resources, exploit and consume effectively, protect environment and prevent disasters on transboundary river basins. The problems have been paid the attention by scientists and agencies of both countries. This report presents the expressions of climate change impacts on water resources on VietnamChina transboundary river basins and...

  • This study investigates impacts of climate change on water resource in the Huong River basin in the Central Vietnam. Hydrological responses of six climate change scenarios were calculated. Results reveal that climate change would cause significant increase in rainfall in wet season resulting in an increase in river flow. By contrast, the decreasing trend of river flow in dry season is a consequence of the decline of rainfall and increase of evapotranspiration under most scenarios. Sea level rise coupled with the lowering of river stages may exacerbate salinity intrusion.

  • Rapid socio–economic development leads to a great increase in water demand of many sectors and conflicts between water users. Moreover, studies have warned about serious degree of influence of climate change (CC) on Vietnam, particularly on the water resources. Therefore, assess CC impacts on water balances are very necessary task. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has completed the appropriate climate change scenarios in Vietnam [1].

  • Climate change (CC) is one of the most significant challenges facing human beings in the 21st century. CC will seriously affect lives, production and environment worldwide. It also leads to the increasing temperature and one of its consequences is sea level rise, resulting in unpredicted changes of the river flow. This may cause more severe floods, serious drought and water shortage, further to continent of the salinity intrusions and negatively effect on the human’s lives, socio-economic development.
