  • Abstract Physiological and biochemical responses induced by salt stress were studied in laboratory-grown young plants of the mangrove, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. The growth rates and leaf areas were highest in the culture with 125 mM NaCl. Transpiration rates showed a diel periodicity when the plants were placed in water, but the oscillatory cycles disappeared for plants placed in higher

  • The concept of rate-modulated (rate-responsive, rate-adaptive) pacemakers is to move beyond simple backup pacing for bradycardias to helping a patient adapt to physiologic stress with an increase in heart rate, even if the patient's intrinsic sinus node normally would not allow this to occur. The development of dual-chamber pacemakers allows a patient to increase the heart rate if he or she is in sinus rhythm and sinus function is intact. Many patients, however, have sick sinus syndrome that prevents normal physiologic sinus node response to exercise, stress, or chronic atrial fibrillation.

  • Controlled oxidation is increasingly being practiced using solid peroxides, pH modifiers, and catalysts that promote the generation of free radicals. This new approach moderates the rate of dissolution and peroxide generation, which in turn controls that rate of reaction between peroxide and the petroleum contaminants. The use of slurried peroxides creates the opportunity to release oxidants and oxygen over a longer period, which can promote subsequent aerobic remediation.

  • Today there are many services which provide information over the phone using a prerecorded or synthesized voice. These voices are invariant in speed. Humans giving information over the telephone, however, tend to adapt the speed of their presentation to suit the needs of the listener. This paper presents a preliminary model of this adaptation. In a corpus of simulated directory assistance dialogs the operator’s speed in number-giving correlates with the speed of the user’s initial response and with the user’s speaking rate.

  • Because an interest rate swap is just a series of cash flows occurring at known future dates, it can be valued by sim ply summing the present value of each of these cash flows. In order to calculate the present value of each cash flow, it is necessary to first estimate the correct discount factor (df) for each period (t) on which a cash flow occurs. Dis count factors are derived from investors’ perceptions of in terest rates in the future and are calculated using forward rates such as LIBOR. The following formula calculates a theoretical rate (known as the “Swap Rate”) for...

  • The potential impact of debt on inflation depends on the response of monetary policy. High government debt could well constrain the ability of the central banks to set the policy rate to control inflation. This is the “fiscal dominance” view. Heavily debted governments force the central bank to accept inflation in order to reduce the real value of their debt. Historically, inflation has helped governments to reduce their public debt burdens.

  • The study presented in this book is a direct response to the needs for defining and registering criminal and judicial data on the European level. Based upon work done by the European Sourcebook experts group in creating the European Source- book of Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics (ESB), the project intended to improve and complement the standards developed so far for definitions and statistical registration in four fields, in order to contribute to the picture of criminal justice in Europe. It utilized questionnaires filled by an established European network....

  • As our understanding of human genetics has increased at an explosive rate over the last half century, genetic knowledge has become more relevant to us and to those we love. In the 1990s and early 2000s, scientists mapped the human genome and began to understand the ways in which a variety of different genes function in human beings. Their initial goal was to gain information and insight into how the genes we are born with might affect our lives and the lives of our children.

  • A limitation to the study was the use of key informants who were thought to be the most knowledgeable in their country but who might have come from differing perspectives. For a few countries multiple responses were obtained. In these cases, the information provided was reviewed and the most internally consistent response was incorporated into the survey database. Concern with the low response rate was discussed with WHO’s network of experts in this area and others involved in this type of studies.

  • Modeling of individual users is a promising way of improving the performance of spoken dialogue systems deployed for the general public and utilized repeatedly. We define “implicitly-supervised” ASR accuracy per user on the basis of responses following the system’s explicit confirmations. We combine the estimated ASR accuracy with the user’s barge-in rate, which represents how well the user is accustomed to using the system, to predict interpretation errors in barge-in utterances. Experimental results showed that the estimated ASR accuracy improved prediction performance.

  • Banks operating in the main developed countries have been exposed, since the Seventies, to four significant drivers of change, mutually interconnected and mutually reinforcing. The first one is a stronger integration among national financial markets (such as stock markets and markets for interest rates and FX rates) which made it easier, for economic shocks, to spread across national boundaries.

The scope addresses factors including size of the customer population, strengths and weaknesses of alternate methods, survey response rates and resource constraints. When taken with the information needs of the organization, these factors converge to suggest appropriate survey methods and designs that will facilitate an effective customer satisfaction measurement (CSM) process. ...

  • Having studied the effect of monetary policy and capital ows shocks on housing activity, our second contribution is to explore how nancial innovation affects the transmission of the two shocks. Using an index of mortgage market development constructed in IMF (2008), 1 we split our sample in two groups of countries (with high and low mortgage market development) and estimate our panel VAR model across the two subsamples. We also split the sample using the ratio of mortgage debt to GDP in 2004.

  • Does this mean that differences in genetic diversity levels will have predictable ecological consequences? The answer is no, because only one portion of genetic diversity is connected to ecological factors, i.e. adaptation. Ecological adaptation is a significant factor for example, in range expansion of plant species. Plants with different genotypes conferring the highest levels of fitness are expected to survive and reproduce better, shifting the gene pool over time towards higher frequencies of the alleles making up the more successful genotypes (Ward et al., 2008).

  • Women's risk for many diseases increases at menopause, which occurs at a median age of 51.4 years. In the industrialized world, women spend one-third of their lives in the postmenopausal period. Estrogen levels fall abruptly at menopause, inducing a variety of physiologic and metabolic responses. Rates of cardiovascular disease increase and bone density begins to decrease rapidly after menopause. In the United States, women live on average about 5 years longer than men, with a life expectancy at birth in 2004 of 80.4 years, compared to 75.2 years in men.

The first stage took place in April 2004 in Phnom Penh where 400 interviews were conducted and the second stage in July and August 2004 in the five provinces and involved 800 interviews. In addition, because of problems encountered during the initial fieldwork in Phnom Penh, supplemental interviewing was undertaken in June, August and September. This resulted in an additional 73 interviews, making the total Phnom Penh sample size 473. 2 A detailed description of response rates is provided in Appendix C. Refusal rates were 8.
