  • Two genes (CM-AAT1 and CM-AAT2) with strong sequence homology (87% identity at the protein level) putatively involved in the formation of aroma volatile esters have been isolated from Charentais melon fruit. They belong to a large and highly divergent family of multifunctional plant acyl-transferases and show at most 21% identity to the only other fruit acyl-transferase characterized so far in strawberry. RT-PCR studies indicated that both genes were specifically expressed in fruit at increasing rates in the early and mid phases of ripening.

  • The creation of quick jobs, as opposed to training, often results in the creation of too many bricklayers, often of not very good caliber. So that when the fund goes, people are no more able to get a good job than before. Sometimes there is a contradiction between building quality projects and using local labor, because when asked, municipalities often want quality projects. And yet bilateral and multilateral agencies say they want local labor to be employed. Finally, there are some environmental issues.

  • We build a two-country general equilibrium model of exchange rates that features two roles for nontraded goods: as ¯nal consumption and as an input into the production of ¯nal tradable goods (retail services). In addition to retail services, ¯nal tradable goods require the use of local and imported intermediate traded inputs. Intermediate traded goods and nontraded goods are produced using local labor and capital services. Thus, our model has an input-output structure (as in Obstfeld, 2001), where the output of some sectors is used as an input to the production of ¯nal goods.

  • Hedge funds increased in value to €79 billion, driven largely by revaluations of €2.2 billion amid a net transactions outflow of €0.3 billion. The revaluation performance was tempered by the fact that some hedge funds assumed short positions in a positively performing market. Hedge funds have not outperformed other investment strategies in the year to date. Other funds, comprising mostly mixed funds 3 , experienced negligible inflows of €0.2 billion, despite positive revaluations of €5.1 billion, culminating in an increase in overall stock to €152 billion. ...

  • The second cluster of chapters focuses on factors that facilitate the adoption or nonadoption of agroforestry systems. The authors of the last three chapters argue that increasing the scale of adoption and the impact of agroforestry innovations requires actions that are based on an understanding of the dynamics of adoption and the critical factors that determine whether farmers accept, do not accept, or partially accept, innovations. Place et al.

  • Investors favour real assets as a hedge against rising inflation rates. Whereas, in an environment of higher inflation, financial assets such as bonds lose value in real terms, the real prices of real assets remain stable or increase. During the last 15 years, inflation rates in the industrialised countries have fluctuated at moderate levels of up to 3% p.a. (see Fig. 11), although in some countries they have been considerably less. In such an environment, investment in real assets with a view to inflation protection typically offers hardly any advantages.

  • A number of OECD countries experienced an environment of low interest rates and a rapid increase in housing market activity during the last decade. Previous work suggests three potential explanations for these events: expansionary monetary policy, capital inflows due to a global savings glut and excessive financial innovation combined with inappropriately lax financial regulation. In this study we examine the effects of these three factors on the housing market.

Job creation accelerated in FY 2011, with the economy adding about 1.9 million private nonfarm payroll jobs (after creating nearly 350,000 private nonfarm payroll jobs during the previous fiscal year). Overall inflation increased during the course of the year, reflecting higher energy and food prices.

  • From this mechanical standardization of consumable goods it follows, on the one hand, that the demand for goods settles upon certain defined lines of production which handle certain materials of definite grade, in certain, somewhat invariable forms and proportions; which leads to well−defined methods and measurements in the processes of production, shortening the average period of "ripening" that intervenes between the first raw stage of the product and its finished shape, and reducing the aggregate stock of goods necessary to be carried for the supply of current wants, whether ...
