  • CarSim is an automatic text-to-scene conversion system. It analyzes written descriptions of car accidents and synthesizes 3D scenes of them. The conversion process consists of two stages. An information extraction module creates a tabular description of the accident and a visual simulator generates and animates the scene. We implemented a first version of CarSim that considered a corpus of texts in French. We redesigned its linguistic modules and its interface and we applied it to texts in English from the National Transportation Safety Board in the United States. ...

  • Distance-based insurance reflects the principle that prices should be based on costs. It gives consumers a new way to save money by returning to individual motorists the insurance cost savings that result when they drive less. Motorists who continue their current mileage would be no worse off on average then they are now (excepting any additional transaction costs), while those who reduce their mileage save money. Distance-based pricing can help achieve several public policy goals including actuarial accuracy, equity, affordability, road safety, consumer savings and choice.

  • Bolted body panels have become increasingly common over recent years, with many vehicles now using bolted front wings, front panel assemblies, bonnet slam panels and bumper bar supports. Obviously accident damage on such cars is much easier to repair, allowing simpler removal/refit of panels, and also easier preparation and painting in some cases. Panels can be prepared, primed and painted "off-the-car" if a good colour match is possible. A close visual inspection usually shows exactly where a particular panel is bolted.

  • For the past hundred years, innovation within the automotive sector has brought major technological advances, leading to safer, cleaner, and more affordable vehicles. But for the most part, since Henry Ford introduced the moving assembly line, the changes have been incremental, evolutionary. Now, in the early decades of the 21st century, the industry appears to be on the cusp of revolutionary change—with potential to dramatically reshape not just the competitive landscape but also the way we interact with vehicles and, indeed, the future design of our roads and cities.

  • While driving on a busy city street one night a few years ago, I flinched as something from out of the sky crashed down on my windshield, striking it with a tremendous thud. The thing startled me and I heard the glass give under the object’s force—but it didn’t crack. I stopped, got out, and looked around. On the side of the road I spotted the menace—a section of tailpipe that apparently had been struck and thrown up into the air by a passing vehicle. The rusty metal object landed hard, leaving a few deep scratches on my windshield—the safety glass held up under the...
