This is a project book on building small robots. Each robot utilizes the PICmicro
series of microcontrollers from Microchip Technologies Inc. for intelligence, navigation,
motor control, and sensory readings. By changing the microcontroller
programming and sensory electronics we can create a zoo of robots that includes
(neural) robots, hexapod and bipedal walkers, and
artificial vision systems that can track and follow objects.

Throughout its history, the Army has been manpower-intensive in most of its systems. The
combination of demographic changes (fewer young men), changed battlefield scenarios, and
advanced technologies in improved robotics, computers, and artificial intelligence (AI) suggests
both a need and an opportunity to multiply the effectiveness of Army personnel.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been from its beginning the wave of evolution in computer
science. It is in good health and a proof of it is the fact that many companies qualify its
novelties as ‘smart’ or ‘intelligent’ independently of the features included in them; the term
‘society of knowledge’ has been imposed to draw society nearer to the future and a symbol

The advancements of the research on Mobile Robots with high degree of autonomy is
possible, on one hand, due to its broad perspective of applications and, on other hand, due
to the development and reduction of costs on computer, electronic and mechanic systems.
Together with the research in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science, this scenario
currently enables the proposition of ambitious and complex robotic projects.
In the 21st century, life for humans being has become busy to the extent that they strive for a
comfortable and easy life. Service robots can provide this comfort to humans by doing all
their difficult and dirty work. In order to provide this service, robots should be able to work
in the same environment as humans. Service robots should have intelligent abilities such as
greeting, conversation with humans, moving while avoiding obstacles, grabbing objects, etc
