  • THE TEAM THAT OPERATED the Nut Island sewage treatment plant in Quincy, Massachusetts, was every manager’s dream. Members of the group performed difficult, dangerous work without complaint. They needed little supervision. They improvised their way around operational difficulties and budgetary constraints. They were dedicated to the organization’s mission. But their hard work let to catastrophic failure.

  • It is not always evident why economic growth takes root in one area over another. Even within a single region, some communities may outpace their neighbors in securing the economic growth that leads to an enhanced quality of life. Although some commonalities in these situations may be identifiable, many communities possess similar assets and implement apparently similar economic development plans, yet have experiences that are vastly different—perhaps even diametrically opposed.

  • A number of OECD countries experienced an environment of low interest rates and a rapid increase in housing market activity during the last decade. Previous work suggests three potential explanations for these events: expansionary monetary policy, capital inflows due to a global savings glut and excessive financial innovation combined with inappropriately lax financial regulation. In this study we examine the effects of these three factors on the housing market.

  • At the bottom of the screen is the Property inspector. If the Property inspector isn’t visible, choose Window Properties. The Property inspector displays properties for a selected object or tool. You can change these properties. If no objects or tools are selected, the Property inspector displays document properties. The Property inspector displays either two or four rows of properties. If the Property inspector is at half height, that is, displaying only two rows, you can click the expander arrow in the lower right corner to see all properties.

Đây là nỗ lực nghiên cứu mạnh bắt nguồn từ mâu thuẫn vốn có giữa mô hình dữ liệu GIS (có thể là raster hoặc vector) và đại diện máy tính của các quá trình năng động.

  • Diversification of the portfolio can only reduce the so-called non-systematic risk, however. The systematic risk, i.e. the interdependence of returns on changes in the overall market and/or shocks cannot be eliminated. For instance, the returns on equities and investments in specific real assets are necessarily positively correlated by the underlying economic determinants. The return on an invest- ment in equities depends e.g. on company profits and therefore also on growth.

  • Our methodology is based on a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) calibrated model augmented with endogenous market structures in line with recent developments in the macroeconomic literature (see Etro, 2009, for a survey). This model is perturbed with a realistic structural change to the cost structure, with the purpose to study the short and long term reactions of the economy. Therefore, our methodology is based on a solid theoretical framework and provides results that can be easily replicated by economists. However, it has some limitations that we need to point out.

  • Circular dichroism (CD) spectra of two major hemoglobin components (Hb), HbI and HbIV, from Oncorhyncus mykiss(formerly Salmo irideus) trout were evaluated in the range 250–600 nm. HbI is characterized by a complete insensitivity to pH changes, while HbIV presents the Root effect. Both reduced [iron(II) or oxy] and oxidized (met) forms of the two proteins were studied at different pHs, 7.8 and 6.0, to obtain information about the pH effects on the structural features of these hemoglobins.

  • When the predicates table does not fit on one node, joins can no longer be performed strictly locally. Instead, the table must be horizontally partitioned. A tuple can only immediately join with the local partition at the node and must be shipped to other nodes to complete the join. Once the original tuple has reached every node that contains a partition of the table, it can be dropped and results can be forwarded to the root.

  • Not as well appreciated as it ought to be is the fact that some polynomials are exceedingly ill-conditioned. The tiniest changes in a polynomial’s coefficients can, in the worst case, send its roots sprawling all over the complex plane. (An infamous example due to Wilkinson is detailed by Acton [1].) Recall that a polynomial of degree n will have n roots. The roots can be real or complex, and they might not be distinct.

  • Several molecular changes occur following axotomy, such as gene up-regulation and down-regulation. In our previous study using Affymetrix arrays, it was found that after the axotomy of sciatic nerve, there were many novel genes with significant expression changes. Among them, neuronatin (Nnat) was the one which expression was significantly up-regulated. Nnat was identified as a gene selectively expressed in neonatal brains and markedly reduced in adult brains.

  • A growing literature examines household finance and especially the borrowing and savings decisions of households. 5 Using evidence from the FinMark Trust (FinScope) surveys in 2009 in Kenya, one study shows that savings and credit services are used mostly for family-related purposes and less for business-related purposes. 6 This finding is consistent with another study showing that about half the volume of borrowing by poor households is for nonbusiness purposes, including consumption.
