This Institute of Medicine/National Research Council report was
in response to a congressional request that the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) contract with the National Academies
for a comprehensive study of gaps in public health protection provided by
the food safety system in the United States. In particular, the study was to
review the role of the FDA in ensuring the safety of the nation’s food supply.
The purpose of these recommended guidelines is to promote safety in the use of power boilers. The term “power boiler” in this Section includes stationary, portable, and traction type boilers, but does not include locomotive and high temperature water boilers, nuclear power plant boilers.

In 2007, the Tianjin Binhai New Area (TBNA) and one of its administrative zones—the
Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA)—in northeast China asked
the RAND Corporation to perform a technology-foresight study to help them develop and
implement a strategic vision and plan for economic growth through technological innovation.
This book describes the results of that study.
That being said, when a specific facility is talked about, for clarity, we refer to it as a proper name and, if necessary, include its function (e.g., Ames 12-Foot Pressure Wind Tunnel). As well, the term “test facilities” and “facilities” can be substituted to mean “WT/PT facilities.” Of course, NASA owns and operates other types of test facilities outside of WT/PT facilities, but our conclusions and recommendations do not apply to them.
The adaptive security appliance delivers unprecedented levels of defense against threats to the network
with deeper web inspection and flow-specific analysis, improved secure connectivity via end-point
security posture validation, and voice and video over VPN support. It also provides enhanced support
for intelligent information networks through improved network integration, resiliency, and scalability.
The adaptive security appliance software combines firewall, VPN concentrator, and intrusion prevention
software functionality into one software image.
This Report was developed under the auspices of Program Area
Committee 2 of the National Council on Radiation Protection and
Measurements (NCRP), the committee that is concerned with operational
radiation safety. The Report addresses the structural shielding
design for medical x-ray imaging facilities and supersedes the
parts that address such facilities in NCRP Report No. 49, Structural
Shielding Design and Evaluation for Medical Use of X Rays and
Gamma Rays of Energies Up to 10 MeV, which was issued in
Although the number of new infections among children has decreased
sharply over the past several years (as noted previously in this report),
greater efforts are needed to ensure that progress continues. Most cases
of HIV infection among infants and children stem from insufficient
information and counselling provision among women in regards
to HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive rights and the lack of adequate
antenatal care during pregnancy. Respondents consider all new cases to
be inexcusable given the broad prevention mechanisms
Serous or “body cavity fluids” are usually collected with aseptic technique by needle puncture and
aspiration of the body cavity fluid. Methods for obtaining the specimen vary depending upon the
site. Fluids are best collected into a dry container and submitted in the fresh state to the
Adding 3-5 IU heparin/mL to a container prior to obtaining a bloody sample will
usually inhibit clotting and not adversely affect morphology. If delay in transportation to the
laboratory is unavoidable, most fluids may be kept refrigerated (4ºC) up to 72 hours.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has
requested that the National Academies, through the National Research
Council (NRC) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), conduct a series of
reviews of its research portfolio. The charge is discussed in detail in a subsequent
section, but in general it is to evaluate the relevance and impact of a NIOSH research
program and to provide recommendations for future research. This report
contains a review and evaluation of the NIOSH Traumatic Injury (TI) Research
Recurring themes woven throughout this budget include maintaining service levels in departments that have
had grants expire. Significant investments in public safety personnel, equipment and vehicles are included.
We are recommending, to the extent possible, to offset increases to our residents and employees when rates
have increased. Another theme you will see is our efforts to look toward the future.
The report contains recommendations in each of the above categories, as well some general
recommendations. We believe these recommendations will further advance our collective goal to
provide a safer online experience to our children.
We would like to personally thank the support of the National Telecommunications and Information
Administration (NTIA) and its staff during this process. Their assistance throughout the past year was
invaluable in allowing us to execute on our mandate.
The following overview illustrates the main set of criteria and standards for the IS audit.
The IS audit checks the effectiveness of the security organisation as well as the appropriateness and
implementation of the organisation’s security concept. The security strategy and the
implementations of technical, organisational, and personal safeguards are examined (see [BMI2]).
IS audits should be performed regularly. Federal agencies are obligated by the Federal
Implementation Plan to perform a comprehensive IS audit at least every 3 years.
In response to the murder of five Cape Town petrol station attendants in June 2002, a major investigation was conducted into crime and safety at South African petrol stations. Based on input from stakeholders and a survey of 25 petrol stations in the Western Cape, this report assesses the crime situation and formulates security recommendations.
You may decide you want your walk to finish in the same place as the start. If so, you will need to think
about how to separate the starters from the finishers – either by using a different part of the park for
example, or by being sure that no one will finish the course before the last person sets off.
You need to set up a well-defined finish line to give walkers that moment of knowing that they’ve
completed the distance. As well as the all-important finish line the finish site should ideally offer toilets
and refreshments and...
Weld toe improvement methods have been widely investigated and have, in most cases, been found to give substantial
increases in fatigue strength. However, there are large variations in the actual improvements achieved, and the results
obtained by various methods are not always ranked in a consistent manner. One explanation for the observed varia
tions is the lack of standardization of the optimum method of application, but variations in the material, type of loading
and type of weld detail may also have influenced the results.
