  • As the amount of on-line scientific literature in the biomedical domain increases, automatic processing has become a promising approach for accelerating research. We are applying syntactic parsing trained on the general domain to identify proteinprotein interactions. One of the main difficulties obstructing the use of language processing is the prevalence of specialized terminology. Accordingly, we have created a specialized dictionary by compiling on-line glossaries, and have applied it for information extraction.

  • In this paper we describe the X-TRACT workbench, which enables efficient termbased querying against a domain-specific literature corpus. Its main aim is to aid domain specialists in locating and extracting new knowledge from scientific literature corpora. Before querying, a corpus is automatically terminologically analysed by the ATRACT system, which performs terminology recognition based on the C/NCvalue method enhanced by incorporation of term variation handling.

  • We propose an approach for extracting relations between entities from biomedical literature based solely on shallow linguistic information. We use a combination of kernel functions to integrate two different information sources: (i) the whole sentence where the relation appears, and (ii) the local contexts around the interacting entities. We performed experiments on extracting gene and protein interactions from two different data sets. The results show that our approach outperforms most of the previous methods based on syntactic and semantic information. ...

A number of substances are considered measures of water quality, but are seldom of concern as pollutants to be treated in constructed wetlands. These include common metals (e.g., sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium) as well as halogens (e.g., fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine). Together with sulfate, these compounds often dominate the total ion content of natural waters and wastewaters.

  • There was a time, long ago, when endoscopy was a small off-shoot of gastroenterology, and when most of what budding endoscopists needed to know could be covered in a slim book. Thus Practical Gastrointestinal Endoscopy was conceived by Christopher Williams and myself over 25 years ago, and had a successful run through four editions. The field has expanded enormously over that time. The number and variety of procedures, and the relevant scientific literature, have proliferated, and there is now a hierarchy within endoscopy.

  • Few of us can any longer keep up with the flood of scientific literature, even in specialized subfields. Any attempt to do more and be broadly educated with respect to a large domain of science has the appearance of tilting at windmills. Yet the synthesis of ideas drawn from different subjects into new, powerful, general concepts is as valuable as ever, and the desire to remain educated persists in all scientists.

  • Nutritional Biochemistry takes a scientific approach to nutrition. It covers not just "whats"--nutritional requirements--but why they are required for human health, by describing their function at the cellular and molecular level. Each case study either leads to a subsequent discovery or enables an understanding of the physiological mechanisms of action of various nutrition-related processes. The text is "picture-oriented" and the commentary is directed towards explaining graphs, figures, and tables. ...

  • The scientific literature suggests that the best unit to assess ecosystems is the 'socio-ecological system (SES)' (Gallopin, 1991, Glaser, 2008). SES integrates ecosystem functions and dynamics as well as human activities and the interactions of all these. The SES is equivalent to the SNA's institutional unit. Considering the production of ecosystem services, and in particular provisioning services, SESs are more or less homogenous.

However, if one is able to sift through the vast amounts of nano literature, there are also numerous reports that are of both academic and commercial importance. This is particularly true for the field of catalysis in which rapid progress is being made that has transformed this once black art into a science, which is understood on a molecular and even atomic level.
