  • We present the proceedings from the workshop entitled Scientific Detectors for Astronomy 2005, a weeklong meeting held in Taormina, Sicily during 19-25 June 2005. This was the sixth workshop of this series, and the fourth with hardcover proceedings. By all measures, this workshop surpassed the previous meetings. The primary purpose of any technical meeting is the exchange of scientific and engineering information.

  • In this note we consider the filtering problem for financial volatility that is an Ornstein-Ulhenbeck process from point process observation. This problem is investigated for a Markov-Feller process of which the Ornstein-Ulhenbeck process is a particular case.

  • Existing models of plan inference (PI) in conversation have assumed that the agent whose plan is being inferred (the actor) and the agent drawing the inference (the observer) have identical beliefs about actions in the domain. I argue that this assumption often results in failure of both the PI process and the communicative process that PI is meant to support. In particular, it precludes the principled generation of appropriate responses to queries that arise from invalid plans. I describe a model of P1 that abandons this assumption. It rests on an analysis of plans as mental phenomena.

  • In 1877 the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910) observed some markings on the planet Mars which he referred to as canali. This was mistranslated into English as canals, suggesting man-made structures and the existence of intelligent life on Mars, instead of channels, which occur naturally. The idea of canals appealed to the imaginations of scientists and novelists alike. The astronomer Percival Lowell used it as the basis for his 'scientific observations', recorded in such works as Mars and its Canals (1908). The novelist H.G.

  • Intonation is important for learners of English because even with satisfactory consonants and vowels, a phrase/sentence with an incorrect intonation contour may change the intended meaning of the whole utterance.

  • In the 1980s and early 1990s, I had the opportunity to observe a number of development projects in the Amazon region of Brazil. Some of the projects were designed to improve the life of colonists in the region, while others were focused on management of natural resources. All the projects were “top down” in the sense that project design and direction were carried out by high-level corporate or government sponsors at headquarters far removed from the affected areas.

  • Developing a sustainable simulation system consists essentially of generating sustainable, artificial worlds with the capacity to produce results similar to those observed in the real world. This allows for varying parameters in a controlled, reusable experimental environment, something that cannot be easily achieved through mathematical models.

  • A second problem often observed in developing countries in the credit-investment process is that loans are allocated according to political considerations or ties between bank managers and the corporate sector. This practice is problematic for two reasons: First, even if the central bank can create liquidity and the financial sector as a whole is thus not be constrained by a lack of base money, banks in developing countries are often weakly capitalized. Legal minimum capital-adequacy ratios hence limit the overall amount of loans provided by the financial sector.

  • In this research, the growth and metabolic activities of Saccharomyces cerevisiae immobilized in alginate gel during alcoholic fermentation with different initial glucose concentration were studied. Starting from initial glucose concentration at 140 g/L, we observed that increasing this concentration to 220 g/L had little effect on the growth of immobilized yeast. Under the same conditions, the maximum biomass, glucose uptake rate, and final ethanol concentration obtained in the immobilized yeast cultures were always higher than those in the free yeast cultures....

  • in sunlight. This resulted in the development of a wide variety of sophisticated and elegant sundials, which became the standard timekeepers. Sundials were also used as reference for other modes of time-keeping such as hourglasses. Time kept by this method is called apparent solar time. The time between successive appearances of the Sun at the local meridian defines the apparent solar day. Because of Earth’s elliptical orbit, the angular distance it covers per day varies. It moves more rapidly in winter when it approaches perihelion than in summer when it’s near aphelion....

  • Behind every wood solution from Steelcase, is a deep commitment to understanding our customers’ needs. We observe, we question, we listen and we learn about how people work. Why are we so inquisitive? Because this knowledge enables us to design office solutions that create a better work experience. We’ll even tailor a solution if one of our standard products isn’t exactly what you desire. The result is beautiful wood solutions that can help to attract and retain valuable knowledge workers and help them to be more effective and efficient.

  • Environmental health decision making can be a complex undertaking, as there is the need to navigate and find balance among three core elements: science, policy, and the needs of the American public. Much of environmental health decision making started in the 1950s and 1960s and was focused on health effects of simple environmental exposures. However, scientific knowledge has rapidly changed as new technologies and new insights into the complexity of environment–health interactions have emerged.

  • The phenomenon of Mirror Symmetry, in its “classical” version, was first observed for Calabi-Yau manifolds, and mathematicians were introduced to it through a series of remarkable papers [20], [13], [38], [40], [15], [30]. Some very strong conjectures have been made about its topological interpretation – e.g. the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. In a different direction, the framework of mirror symmetry was extended by Batyrev, Givental, Hori, Vafa, etc. to the case of Fano manifolds.

  • Cyanobacteria are a diverse group of unicellular and multicellular photosynthetic prokaryotes (Castenholz & Waterbury, 1989; Rippka, 1988); they are often referred to as blue-green algae, even though it is now known that they are not related to any of the other algal groups. Seasonal patterns of picoplankton abundance have been observed in many studies, revealing a strong relation with water temperature.

  • For many classically chaotic systems it is believed that the quantum wave functions become uniformly distributed, that is the matrix elements of smooth observables tend to the phase space average of the observable. In this paper we study the fluctuations of the matrix elements for the desymmetrized quantum cat map. We present a conjecture for the distribution of the normalized matrix elements, namely that their distribution is that of a certain weighted sum of traces of independent matrices in SU(2).

  • Poincar´ made the first attempt in 1896 on applying variational calculus e to the three-body problem and observed that collision orbits do not necessarily have higher values of action than classical solutions. Little progress had been made on resolving this difficulty until a recent breakthrough by Chenciner and Montgomery. Afterward, variational methods were successfully applied to the N -body problem to construct new classes of solutions.

  • There is an urgent need to develop new innovative therapies for the control of advanced cancer. The combination of antigen-specific immunotherapy with the employment of immunomodulatory agents has emerged as a potentially plausible approach for the control of advanced cancer. Methods: In the current study, we explored the combination of the DNA vaccine encoding calreticulin (CRT) linked to human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) E7 antigen (CRT/E7) with the TLR7 agonist imiquimod for their ability to generate E7-specific immune responses and antitumor effects in tumor-bearing mice.
