  • The Chemical Sciences Roundtable (CSR) was established in 1997 by the National Research Council (NRC). It provides a science-oriented, apolitical forum for leaders in the chemical sciences to discuss chemically related issues affecting government, industry, and universities. Organized by the NRC’s Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology, the CSR aims to strengthen the chemical sciences by fostering communication among the people and organizations—spanning industry, government, universities, and professional associations—involved with the chemical enterprise.

  • Toxicogenomics has been described as a discipline combining ex- pertise in toxicology, genetics, molecular biology, and environmental health to elucidate the response of living organisms to stressful environ- ments. It includes the study of how genomes respond to toxicant expo- sures and how genotype affects responses to toxicant exposures. As the technologies for monitoring these responses rapidly develop, it is critical that scientists and regulators are confident that the technologies are reli- able and reproducible and that the data analyses have been validated.

  • Each year, typically in the summer, the Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate selects a topic for special study (often called our “summer study”). Our goal is to organize an informal workshop where scientists and agency staff can share information about current issues in the atmospheric sciences, meteorology, and climate. These events are a forum for frank discussions and creative inter- action, and sometimes lead us to develop more in-depth activities.

  • I n 1993 the National Research Council’s Board on Biology established a series of forums on biotechnology. The purpose of the discussions is to foster open communication among scientists, administrators, policy-makers, and others engaged in biotechnology research, develop- ment, and commercialization. The neutral setting offered by the National Research Council is intended to promote mutual understanding among government, industry, and academe and to help develop imaginative ap- proaches to problem-solving. The objective, however, is to illuminate issues, not to resolve them.
