  • The purpose of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®) is to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English. The test was initially developed to measure the English proficiency of international students wishing to study at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, and this continues to be its primary function. However, a number of academic institutions in other countries, as well as certain independent organizations, agencies, and foreign governments, have also found the test scores useful.

  • Credit and credit scoring can be a mysterious, complex subject, which means any journalist trying to cover this area of personal finance needs great sources. I’ve been extraordinarily fortunate to have found experts who not only knew their fields, but who were willing to spend time helping me under-stand them, too. At the top of this list is Craig Watts, spokesman for Fair Isaac Corp., who invested hours researching and carefully answering my endless questions.

  • When I first started writing about credit scores more than a decade ago, few people knew what these three-digit numbers were or how they worked. Today most people have at least a vague understanding that credit scores are important. But they often don’t realize how important—until they get turned down for a loan or an apartment, or wind up paying more interest or higher insurance premiums than they expected.

  • Low-carbohydrate diets have been advocated for weight loss and to prevent obesity, but the long-term safety of these diets has not been determined. Methods We evaluated data on 82,802 women in the Nurses’ Health Study who had completed a validated food-frequency questionnaire. Data from the questionnaire were used to calculate a low-carbohydrate-diet score, which was based on the percentage of energy as carbohydrate, fat, and protein (a higher score reflects a higher intake of fat and protein and a lower intake of carbohydrate).

  • Automatic tools for machine translation (MT) evaluation such as BLEU are well established, but have the drawbacks that they do not perform well at the sentence level and that they presuppose manually translated reference texts. Assuming that the MT system to be evaluated can deal with both directions of a language pair, in this research we suggest to conduct automatic MT evaluation by determining the orthographic similarity between a back-translation and the original source text. This way we eliminate the need for human translated reference texts.

  • The search space of Phrase-Based Statistical Machine Translation (PBSMT) systems can be represented under the form of a directed acyclic graph (lattice). The quality of this search space can thus be evaluated by computing the best achievable hypothesis in the lattice, the so-called oracle hypothesis. For common SMT metrics, this problem is however NP-hard and can only be solved using heuristics.

  • We define a new feature selection score for text classification based on the KL-divergence between the distribution of words in training documents and their classes. The score favors words that have a similar distribution in documents of the same class but different distributions in documents of different classes. Experiments on two standard data sets indicate that the new method outperforms mutual information, especially for smaller categories.

  • We describe an approach to improve the bilingual cooccurrence dictionary that is used for word alignment, and evaluate the improved dictionary using a version of the Competitive Linking algorithm. We demonstrate a problem faced by the Competitive Linking algorithm and present an approach to ameliorate it. In particular, we rebuild the bilingual dictionary by clustering similar words in a language and assigning them a higher cooccurrence score with a given word in the other language than each single word would have otherwise.

  • Computing confidence scores for applications, such as dialogue system, information retrieving and extraction, is an active research area. However, its focus has been primarily on computing word-, concept-, or utterance-level confidences.
