  • Sensitive skin is becoming a common clinical condition that dermatologists should be prepared to recognize, understand, and treat. Subjects experiencing this condition report exaggerated reactions when their skin is in contact with cosmetics, soaps, and other substances, and they often report worsening after exposure to dry and cold climates. Sensitive skin and subjective irritation are widespread in western countries, but still far from being completely defined and understood.

  • Providers who agreed to participate and scheduled an interview were sent a consent form for the study and a baseline questionnaire (on services provided, type of clinical staff employed, and number of WHP clients served) by email or fax to be returned to the interviewers. The phone interviews lasted approximately 20-30 minutes each, were conducted by 2 researchers in order for one to take notes, and were based upon interview guides developed for PPFA providers and non-PPFA providers.

  • There are in principle two tests that may be used in mass screening, PSA (prostate specific antigen) and DRE (digital rectal examination). The PSA test is simple, cheap, safe and acceptable. However the prostatic biopsy, required to investigate positive results, is less acceptable and carries significant risks. The accuracy (sensitivity and specificity) of the PSA test is difficult to determine (4). There is no good standard against which to test it, since prostatic biopsy may itself miss 10% to 30% of cases.

  • Because there is no clear definition of the asthma phenotype, researchers studying the development of this complex disease turn to characteristics that can be measured objectively, such as atopy (manifested as the presence of positive skin-prick tests or the clinical response to common environmental allergens), airway hyperresponsiveness (the tendency of airways to narrow excessively in response to triggers that have little or no effect in normal individuals), and other measures of allergic sensitization.

  • Sensitization When intense, repeated, or prolonged stimuli are applied to damaged or inflamed tissues, the threshold for activating primary afferent nociceptors is lowered and the frequency of firing is higher for all stimulus intensities. Inflammatory mediators such as bradykinin, nerve growth factor, some prostaglandins, and leukotrienes contribute to this process, which is called sensitization. In sensitized tissues, normally innocuous stimuli can produce pain. Sensitization is a clinically important process that contributes to tenderness, soreness, and hyperalgesia.

  • Additional Factors in Diagnosis The color, thickness, and sensitivity of the skin are significant. Local tenderness and warmth suggest inflammation. Local cyanosis may signify venous obstruction. In individuals who have had repeated episodes of prolonged edema, the skin over the involved areas may be thickened, indurated, and often red. Estimation of the venous pressure is of importance in evaluating edema. Ordinarily, a significant generalized increase in venous pressure can be recognized by the level at which cervical veins collapse (Chap. 220).

  • In our study, we aimed to determine the validity of diagnostic methods for tuberculosis. Eighty-one people suspected to have tuberculosis were included in the study. The validity of the applied methods for the diagnosis of tuberculosis tuberculin skin test (TST), sputum smear, and used in diagnostic chest X-ray findings (CXR), clinical features and history were evaluated as culture was considered the reference test. Included in the study of 81 people (54 males 27 females) mean age was determined as 45.04 ± 18.69.
