Once platelets are activated, the first event tooccur is a rapid
change in shape, associated with Ca
/calmodulin-dependent myosin light chain (MLC) phosphorylation and
withRhokinase activation. The purpose of this studywas to
investigate which is the biochemical pathway that leads to
platelet shape change in response to convulxin, a selective
GpVI activator, and to verify whether MLC phosphoryla-tion is essential for this process.
Rather than celebrating warfare, 50 Battles That Changed the World looks at the clashes the author believes have had the most profound impact on world history. Listed in order of their relevance to the modern world, they range from the ancient past to the present day and span the globe many times over. This book is not so much about military strategy as the implications of the battles that were vital in shaping civilization as we know it. Some of the battles in this book are familiar to us all-Bunker Hill, which prevented the American Revolution from being stillborn, and...
Born amidst the furious social changes of the mid-1960s, postmodern architecture redefined the purposes of a prestigious profession. In this work, Magali Sarfatti Larson gives a bold and comprehensive account of the social, economic, and ideological shifts that cracked the modernist dogma and reintroduced historical allusion, diversity, and ornament into architectural discourse and practice.
Do you wonder why the latest fitness fad doesn't work for you? Have you lifted weights for months, dreaming of toned, defined muscles, with no results? Have you exercised regularly for months -- or even years -- without seeing any changes in your body? If you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are your exercise routine is incomplete and wrong for your body type.

The challenges shaping the life chances of boys and young men of color are well-documented but still shocking. This book draws attention to the urgent need—both economic and moral—to better understand the policy and community-based factors that serve as incentives or barriers to young men and boys of color as they make critical life decisions. This volume draws attention to the potential of a public policy focus on young men and boys of color as a high-leverage strategy for promoting an agenda for equitable, sustainable, healthy communities in California and across the Nation....

A mix of leading scholars and exciting new writers, the authors show how closely the shape of education is interwoven with that of society. The big picture that emerges is that, even as the overall intention of post-apartheid policy-makers has been to reconcile the interests of unequal and competing social classes and races, the interests of a new, deracialised middle class have come to dominate in formal education. This is despite the strengthening of teacher unions and the fact that movements in adult education and related spheres are re-emerging with a revitalised emancipatory agenda....
The security environment in the Middle East has become increasingly complicated during the past decade. This report identifies several important trends that are shaping regional security and identifies their implications for the United States. Many traditional security concerns, such as energy security and the proliferation of weapons
This revision, which supersedes the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Standard X-673-64-1E, Engineering Drawing Standards Manual, is intended to update and reflect the latest formats and standards adopted by GSFC.The following is a summary of the principal changes and improvements incorporated in this issue.
Satellite altimetry was developed in the 1960s soon after
the flight of artificial satellites became a reality. From the
vantage point in space, a radar altimeter is able to measure
the shape of the sea surface globally and frequently. Such
measurements have a wide range of applications to oceanography,
geodesy, and geophysics. The results are often revolutionary.
For example, in oceanography; it takes a ship weeks
or months to cross the ocean making measurements while
the ocean is constantly changing its circulation, temperature,
This book is about the changes that elected and appointed leaders are making to
the art and practice of governing, governance, and government. It is about how
public managers are shaping and guiding governments’ responses to a fundamental
movement for change that began in the last decades of the twentieth century.

I begin with a brief rationale for the book. This needs to go beyond reasons
for writing such as the clarification of my own ideas or publication of my own
research. Those are both necessary motivations for the writer, but I hope the
book will contribute to debates on urban issues during the first decade of
the twenty-first century. In particular, I hope it will illuminate what certain
kinds of cultural practices contribute, not only reflectively, but in actively
shaping the agendas of future urban development and change....
Shape memory alloys have become in the past decades a well established research subject. However, the complex relations between properties and structure have created a continuously growing interest for a deeper insight all this time. The complexity of relationships between structure and properties is mostly related to the fact that strong ?multidimensional? interactions are taking place: from the early studies focusing on the thermal and/or mechanical induced phase transformations to the more recent findings on the magnetically induced structural changes.
The International Symposium on Nuclear Structure Physics (NP2001) was
held in Gottingen Germany, March 5-8, 2001. The aim of the Symposium
was to discuss recent achievements and new initiatives for research in nuclear
structure and to celebrate the career of Peter von Brentano.
The overall theme was to identify obstacles standing between men and their participation in
reproductive health and to examine strategies for overcoming these obstacles. Another cen-
tral theme was to encourage men’s participation in reproductive health by building on men’s
decision-making traditions in French-speaking African countries.
At the Sixth Southern Conference on Women’s History in Athens, Georgia,
in June 2003, the depth and breadth of the research presented was impressive.
1 As we assembled the very best of the expanded conference papers,
representing the cutting edge of scholarship on southern women’s history,
we were inspired by a story from the front lines rather than the archives, a
contemporary drama of African American labor union women creating and
confronting change in the Mississippi Delta.
Beyond TMT, we find no systematic increase in the importance of industry effects.
Instead, we observe that the ratio of industry to country effects follows a U-shape pattern
from the mid-1980s to the late-1990s, a cyclical pattern whereby global industry effects
become temporarily more important in relative and absolute terms around periods of stock
market distress, such as October 1987 and March 2000. We view this cyclical pattern as
further evidence that the recent increase in industry effects is temporary....
