A systematic control design methodology is introduced for multi-input/multi-output stable
open loop plants with multiple saturations. This new methodology is a substantial improvement
over previous heuristic single-input/single-output approaches.
The idea is to introduce a supervisor loop so that when the references and/or disturbances are
sufficiently small, the control system operates linearly as designed.
The objective of the present book, which tries to summarize in an edited format and in a fairly comprehensive manner, many of the recent technical research accomplishments in the area of Smart Actuators and Smart Sensors, is to combine researchers and scientists from different fields into a single virtual room.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have played an increasingly important
role in sensor and actuator applications. And its key contribution is that it has enabled
the integration of multi-components (i.e., electronics, mechanics, fluidics and etc) on a
single chip and their integration has positive effects upon performance, reliability and
cost. Compared to conventional electrostatic, thermal or magnetic actuating schemes,
piezoelectric MEMS inkjet has the advantages of lower power consumption, lower
voltage operation and relatively larger driving force....
Assembling electrical and mechanical parts is a costly and error-prone step in the process of making
electronic devices. The Fab@Home team at Cornell is pursuing the holy grail of personal fabrication, the
ability to manufacture, on a single 3D printer machine in a single “print job,” an object that contains a
battery, actuators, sensors, and a physical “body.” In other words… a robot.
