  • In this chapter, we present a general approach to the analysis of coefficients of generating functions that is not restricted to polar singularities and extends to a large class of functions that have moderate growth or decay at their dominant singularities. This chapter presents the following content: Prelude, standard function scale, singularity analysis, schemas and transfer theorems.

  • Singularity analysis paves the way to the analysis of a large quantity of generating functions, as provided by the symbolic method expounded in Chapters I–III. In this chapter we illustrate this situation with numerous examples related to languages, permutations, trees, and graphs of various sorts. As in chapter 5, most analyses are organized into broad classes called schemas.

  • This paper is a continuation of Fefferman’s program [7] for studying the geometry and analysis of strictly pseudoconvex domains. The key idea of the program is to consider the Bergman and Szeg¨ kernels of the domains as o analogs of the heat kernel of Riemannian manifolds. In Riemannian (or conformal) geometry, the coefficients of the asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel can be expressed in terms of the curvature of the metric; by integrating the coefficients one obtains index theorems in various settings. ...

  • The purpose of this chapter is largely to serve as an accessible introduction or a refresher of basic notions regarding analytic functions. We start by recalling the elementary theory of functions and their singularities in a style tuned to the needs of analytic combinatorics. Cauchy’s integral formula expresses coefficients of analytic functions as contour integrals. Suitable uses of Cauchy’s integral formula then make it possible to estimate such coefficients by suitably selecting an appropriate contour of integration.

  • Olfaction is primarily mediated by the large family of olfactory receptors. Although all insect olfactory receptors share the same structure with seven transmembrane domains, they present poor sequence homologies within and between species. As the only exception, Drosophila melanogaster OR83b and its orthologues define a receptor subtype singularly conserved between insect species.

  • Pathophysiologic responses in brain after stroke are highly complex. Thus far, a singular focus on saving neurons alone has not revealed any clinically effective neuroprotectants. To address this limitation, the concept of a neu-rovascular unit was developed. Within this conceptual framework, brain function and dysfunction are manifested at the level of cell–cell signaling between neuronal, glial and vascular elements.

  • In conclusion, let us outline a different argument, very much in the spirit of Lectures 8 and 5. We considered in these lectures the space of polynomials of a certain type (such as x3 + px + q or x5 − x + a) and saw that the set of polynomials with multiple roots separated the whole space into pieces, corresponding to the number of roots of a polynomial. The set of polynomials with multiple roots is a (very singular) hypersurface obtained by equating the discriminant of a polynomial to zero.

  • Let p 1 and let (X, d, μ) be a complete metric measure space with μ Borel and doubling that admits a (1, p)-Poincar´ inequality. Then there exists e ε 0 such that (X, d, μ) admits a (1, q)-Poincar´ inequality for every q p−ε, e quantitatively. 1. Introduction Metric spaces of homogeneous type, introduced by Coifman and Weiss [7], [8], have become a standard setting for harmonic analysis related to singular integrals and Hardy spaces. Such metric spaces are often referred to as a metric measure space with a doubling measure. An advantage of working...
