The stigma of HIV often exacerbates this
situation because when men die women are
easily blamed for bringing HIV into the
household, no matter if it is true or not. In
Zambia, women working with Huairou
member organization Katuba Women’s
Association reported being chased out of the
home after their husband’s death, as they
were blamed for bringing the disease into the
home, despite the husbands’ known
infidelities that led to the disease.
While the Agenda 21 covered most aspects of water resources
management, some have assumed much greater importance
in the intervening 20 years. Similarly, while improved water
resources management and development is fundamental to
achieving all the MDGs, it is not specifically mentioned. This
has hampered efforts to raise the profile of water resources
in policy debates.
Transboundary water issues were given little prominence
in 1992; indeed many countries in sensitive transboundary
situations were reluctant to discuss such issues.

In the early 1980s, structural adjustment programs had serious social

financial institutions. The situation was aggravated by urbanization,
making the labor supply particularly elastic in our countries. In Senegal
in 1989, young people accounted for 67.2 percent of the total number of
unemployed men and 52.0 percent of the total number of unemployed
There is ample scientific evidence that working (and other organizational) life and its conditions
are powerful determinants of health, for better or for worse. The relationship
works both ways. Work affects health but health, more often than not, also affects a
person’s productivity and earning capacity as well as his or her social and family relationships.
Needless to say, this holds true for all aspects of health, both physical and
mental (Levi, 2002).
Sensitivity: We believe that sensitivity means a compassionate awareness of the stress experienced
by families with ill and injured children, and an understanding of the impact it can have on the emotions and behavior of the children and families in our care. We strive both to anticipate and respond to issues arising from complex personal and family situations, and to provide the support that can contribute to the best possible outcome for the child and family.
