Lecture Monte carlo simulations: Application to lattice models, part III - Finite size effects and reweighting methods. The main contents of this chapter include all of the following: Finite size effects, single histogram method, multiple histogram method, wang-Landau method, the applications.
This study investigated the effects of Na 2 SO4 additive in the positive electrode on the performance of sealed lead-acid cells. The additive Na 2 SO4 in the cured plates can reduce the 4BS crystal size, which produces a smaller a-PbO 2 and b-PbO 2 crystal size in the formed plates, which will have a larger surface area. The plate’s chemical composition is independent of the amount of Na 2 SO4 additive in the positive electrodes. Plate composition relies only on the cure temperature conditions. ...
Text prediction is the task of suggesting text while the user is typing. Its main aim is to reduce the number of keystrokes that are needed to type a text. In this paper, we address the influence of text type and domain differences on text prediction quality. By training and testing our text prediction algorithm on four different text types (Wikipedia, Twitter, transcriptions of conversational speech and FAQ) with equal corpus sizes, we found that there is a clear effect of text type on text prediction quality: training and testing on the same text type gave percentages of saved...
Accurate estimates of the software cost are a critical part of effective program management, particularly for large, complex systems. Predicting the cost of software has evolved, but the practice of cost prediction is far from perfect. Military and commercial programs alike are replete with examples of software cost estimates that differ
This paper explores the relationship between the translation quality and the retrieval effectiveness in Machine Translation (MT) based Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR). To obtain MT systems of different translation quality, we degrade a rule-based MT system by decreasing the size of the rule base and the size of the dictionary. We use the degraded MT systems to translate queries and submit the translated queries of varying quality to the IR system. Retrieval effectiveness is found to correlate highly with the translation quality of the queries.
Emphasis on effect sizes is a rapidly rising tide as over 20 journals in
various fields of research now require that authors of research reports
provide estimates of effect size. For certain kinds of applied research it is
no longer considered acceptable only to report that results were statistically
significant. Statistically significant results indicate that a researcher
has discovered evidence of a real difference between parameters
or a real association between variables, but it is one of unknown size.
Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) are indispensable electronic components for
advanced electronic technology2-12, but larger capacity and smaller size are needed for
future electronic devices. To meet these needs, BaTiO3 particles were downsized, but
ferroelectric ceramics lose their ferroelectricity when their particle size is decreased and lose
ferroelectricity entirely at a critical size2-11. This is known as the size effect and it impedes the
progress of MLCC, so a novel solution has been eagerly anticipated....
Although mobile devices, cellular phones, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and other
handheld devices have hardware constraints such as small screen, small storage, low CPU
speed, and low resolution, their popularity has been enormously increasing. This is
enhancing the opportunities for researchers to overcome those open problems caused of
small size hardware constraints. However, still the biggest difficulty is that these devices are
too difficult to load today’s visual information because most current information is based on
a large visual documentation.
Staring at a shelf full of Photoshop books at the local
bookstore, it seems that there are more special-effect
“cookbooks” and technical tomes than anyone would ever
care to read. The problem is that none of those “cookbooks”
provide enough detail to really let you feel like you
understand the program (blindly following the listed steps
just doesn’t do it), and all of the technical books are deep
into terms like rasters, vectors, and bit-depth settings. That’s
the primary reason that most people aren’t truly comfortable
In this chapter, the analytical embedded atom method and calculating Gibbs free energy
method are introduced briefly. Combining these methods with molecular dynamic and
Monte Carlo techniques, thermodynamics of nano-silver and alloy particles have been
The bo is an excellent weapon but one of the more
impractical ones because of its size. It is a piece of hard
wood about six feet in length, and therefore cannot be
easily concealed or carried in a car or on your person.
Still, it has remained a favorite karate weapon for years
because of its versatility and beauty when used in the
hands of a master.
An introduction into Online Advertising. – How it all began.
If you ever wondered when it all started, the answer is October 1994 on HotWired, the predecessor to today’s Wired News. The ads were for Zima, Club Med, and AT&T and measured 468 pixels by 60 pixels. This seemingly awkward size effectively filled the horizontal length of a maximized web browser using a monitor resolution of 640x480 pixels (the standard at the time). This banner size became the de facto standard is still widely used today.
Government size has attracted much scholarly attention. Political economists
have considered large public expenditures a product of leftist rule and an ex-
pression of a stronger representation of labor interest. Although the size of the
government has become the most important policy difference between the left
and the right in postwar politics, the formation of the government’s funding
base has not been explored. Junko Kato finds that the differentiation of tax rev-
enue structure is path-dependent upon the shift to regressive taxation.
We find that portfolios in which funds are weighted by their money inf lows
outperform portfolios in which funds are weighted by TNA: New money beats
oldmoney. We also find that high net f low funds outperformlow net f low funds.
Thus, within the universe of actively managed funds, new investors tend to
choose the better ones: Money is smart. This result holds for both individual
and institutional investors, and is driven by investors’ fund buys rather than
sells. The smart money effect is not explained by the Chen et al.
Aside from the fact that these guys need to update their welcome page to comply with Facebook's new 520px page size format, these guys have a great, simple and engaging welcome page that does exactly what it's supposedI'm as much a fan of some of the awesome Facebook pages created for.
The effects of micronization methods, mechanical and jet millings, on the physico-chemical properties of
mushroom (Lentinus edodes) powder were investigated in contrast to shear pulverization. The powders of
dried mushroom cap and stipe were prepared to obtain six powders. Compared to shear pulverization,
mechanical and jet millings effectively reduced particle size and brought about a narrow and uniform
particle size distribution.
