  • More than ten years ago, two of us (AGH and DGR) were lucky enough to edit a previous symposium of the British Ecological Society (BES) – Aquatic Ecology: Scale, Pattern and Process (Giller, Hildrew & Raffaelli, 1994). In the Introduction to that volume, we pointed out that the BES had not devoted a single previous symposium to aquatic ecosystems.

  • This book is Volume I in a series of two books on how to master Small- and Medium-Sized Projects - SMPs. These projects are those that seldom receive serious attention in the regular project literature of today. For better or worse, it is the large, costly, complicated projects that are written about, researched and discussed in the media.

  • INTRODUCTION In the application of industrial servo drives to machines it is important that the drive be large enough to meet all the load torque requirements and be stable. It is necessary to make sure that the servo drive torque rating is large enough to meet the load thrust and acceleration requirements plus the machine friction losses; an organized method to accomplish this is referred to as ‘‘sizing the drive.’’ There are many drive-sizing software programs available from commercial servo drive suppliers.

  • Standard method of test for particle size analysis of soils describes a procedure for the quantitative determination of the distribution of particle sizes in soils. The following applies to all specified limits in this standard: For the purposes of determining conformance with these specifications, an observed value or a calculated value shall be rounded off “to the nearest unit” in the last right-hand place of figures used in expressing the limiting value, in accordance with ASTM E 29. The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method of reducing the size of translation model for hierarchical phrase-based machine translation systems. Previous approaches try to prune infrequent entries or unreliable entries based on statistics, but cause a problem of reducing the translation coverage.

  • In this paper we investigate how much data is required to train an algorithm for attribute selection, a subtask of Referring Expressions Generation (REG). To enable comparison between different-sized training sets, a systematic training method was developed. The results show that depending on the complexity of the domain, training on 10 to 20 items may already lead to a good performance.

  • Empirical studies on corpora involve making measurements of several quantities for the purpose of comparing corpora, creating language models or to make generalizations about specific linguistic phenomena in a language. Quantities such as average word length are stable across sample sizes and hence can be reliably estimated from large enough samples. However, quantities such as vocabulary size change with sample size. Thus measurements based on a given sample will need to be extrapolated to obtain their estimates over larger unseen samples. ...

  • We investigate the effect of corpus size in combining supervised and unsupervised learning for two types of attachment decisions: relative clause attachment and prepositional phrase attachment. The supervised component is Collins’ parser, trained on the Wall Street Journal. The unsupervised component gathers lexical statistics from an unannotated corpus of newswire text. We find that the combined system only improves the performance of the parser for small training sets.

  • Reducing language model (LM) size is a critical issue when applying a LM to realistic applications which have memory constraints. In this paper, three measures are studied for the purpose of LM pruning. They are probability, rank, and entropy. We evaluated the performance of the three pruning criteria in a real application of Chinese text input in terms of character error rate (CER). We first present an empirical comparison, showing that rank performs the best in most cases. We also show that the high-performance of rank lies in its strong correlation with error rate. ...

  • Although mobile devices, cellular phones, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and other handheld devices have hardware constraints such as small screen, small storage, low CPU speed, and low resolution, their popularity has been enormously increasing. This is enhancing the opportunities for researchers to overcome those open problems caused of small size hardware constraints. However, still the biggest difficulty is that these devices are too difficult to load today’s visual information because most current information is based on a large visual documentation.
