  • In response to a request by the Department of Homeland Security, the National Research Council formed an ad hoc committee to organize a two-day workshop to discuss the use of social network analysis (SNA) for the purpose of building community disaster resilience. The workshop was held February 11-12, 2009, in Washington, D.C., and engaged a group of approximately 30 researchers in the fields of SNA and resilience science as well as emergency management practitioners from different regions of the country.

  • We present a general framework for automatically extracting social networks and biographical facts from conversational speech. Our approach relies on fusing the output produced by multiple information extraction modules, including entity recognition and detection, relation detection, and event detection modules.   • This paper brings a marriage of two seemly unrelated topics, natural language processing (NLP) and social network analysis (SNA). We propose a new task in SNA which is to predict the diffusion of a new topic, and design a learning-based framework to solve this problem. We exploit the latent semantic information among users, topics, and social connections as features for prediction. Our framework is evaluated on real data collected from public domain.

  • We present a method for extracting social networks from literature, namely, nineteenth-century British novels and serials. We derive the networks from dialogue interactions, and thus our method depends on the ability to determine when two characters are in conversation. Our approach involves character name chunking, quoted speech attribution and conversation detection given the set of quotes.   • In my thesis, I propose to build a system that would enable extraction of social interactions from texts. To date I have defined a comprehensive set of social events and built a preliminary system that extracts social events from news articles. I plan to improve the performance of my current system by incorporating semantic information. Using domain adaptation techniques, I propose to apply my system to a wide range of genres.
