  • This paper introduces a statistical model for query-relevant summarization: succinctly characterizing the relevance of a document to a query. Learning parameter values for the proposed model requires a large collection of summarized documents, which we do not have, but as a proxy, we use a collection of FAQ (frequently-asked question) documents.

  • This paper describes an architecture for differentiation of Quality of Service in heterogeneous wireless-wired networks. This architecture applies an “all-IP” paradigm, with embedded mobility of users. The architecture allows for multiple types of access networks, and enables user roaming between different operator domains.

  • This is a survey paper on Quality-of-Service(QoS) based routing. In this paper, we first introduce the concept of Quality-of-Service and its background. Second, we discuss the concepts of QoS-based routing, its objectives and main issues. After that, several types of QoS based routing algorithms are compared, and the advantages and disadvantages of each type discussed. Then, the relations between QoS based routing and some relevant techniques are studied, including traffic engineering, high level admission control, resource reservation protocols(e.g.

  • Three major approaches can be used in an effort to segment a market. 22 They include the a-priori, a-posteriori and hybrid approach. The selection of an approach depends on the objectives of the researcher in undertaking a segmentation study. In a-priori (predetermined) market segmentation, the type (segmentation variables) and number of market segments are determined before data collection. With this ap- proach, there are two main questions, namely the estimated sizes of these segments in the market place, and some relevant segment characteristics ( descriptor variables).

  • Tools shape how we think; when the only tool you have is an axe, everything resembles a tree or a log. The rapid advances in instrumentation in the last decade, which allow us to measure and manipulate individual molecules and structures on the nanoscale, have caused a paradigm shift in the way we view molecular behavior and surfaces. The microscopic details underlying interfacial phenomena have customarily been inferred from in situ measurements of macroscopic quantities. Now we can see and “finger” physical and chemical processes at interfaces.

  • This book is written for all those interested in arguments and arguing—and especially for students enrolled in courses designed to improve their critical thinking abilities. My goal in this work is to present enough theory to explain why certain kinds of argument are good or bad and enough illustrations and examples to show how that theory can be applied. The book includes lively illustrations from contemporary debates and issues and ample student exercises. Responses to some exercises are provided within the book, while the remainder are answered in a manual available to instructors.

  • The book is intended to be a collection of contributions providing a bird’s eye view of some relevant multidisciplinary applications of data acquisition. While assuming that the reader is familiar with the basics of sampling theory and analog-to-digital conversion, the attention is focused on applied research and industrial applications of data acquisition. Even in the few cases when theoretical issues are investigated, the goal is making the theory comprehensible to a wide, application-oriented, audience....

  • While the links between ICT and environmental outcomes are becoming clearer, there is no separate statistical field that links the two. Nevertheless, some data are available from official statistical sources, from analytical work and from product life cycle studies. This report suggests a conceptual framework for the new statistical field “ICT and the environment” based on an existing OECD framework for information society statistics. Sources of official data to populate the framework are investigated and some relevant work has been identified.

  • The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellite mission (14) is one of the main sources of data about the early universe. Deciphering the CMB in terms of the density perturbations, gravity wave polarization, power spectrum and its various indices is a formidable task. It also requires the heavy CMB mathematical formalism based on General Relativity — see eg., the textbooks (17–19).
