  • With many 'flexible' structures such as large span bridges, tall buildings, towers, cable roofs, etc., being built, the need to understand the dynamics behavior of structures has become a necessity for many engineers. The recent problems with the millinium bridge is simply another reminder. The many devastating earthquakes in many parts of the world leading to severe loss of life in densely inhabited urban areas alos has underlined the need for a fundamental understanding of structural behavior.

  • Long-span features, such as syntax, can improve language models for tasks such as speech recognition and machine translation. However, these language models can be difficult to use in practice because of the time required to generate features for rescoring a large hypothesis set. In this work, we propose substructure sharing, which saves duplicate work in processing hypothesis sets with redundant hypothesis structures.

  • The Chinese comma signals the boundary of discourse units and also anchors discourse relations between adjacent text spans. In this work, we propose a discourse structureoriented classification of the comma that can be automatically extracted from the Chinese Treebank based on syntactic patterns. We then experimented with two supervised learning methods that automatically disambiguate the Chinese comma based on this classification.

  • Sentiment analysis seeks to identify the viewpoint(s) underlying a text span; an example application is classifying a movie review as “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”. To determine this sentiment polarity, we propose a novel machine-learning method that applies text-categorization techniques to just the subjective portions of the document. Extracting these portions can be implemented using efficient techniques for finding minimum cuts in graphs; this greatly facilitates incorporation of cross-sentence contextual constraints. ...

  • Any complex process requires planning and monitoring. The quality process requires coordination of many different activities over a period that spans a full development cycle and beyond. Planning is necessary to order, provision, and coordinate all the activities that support a quality goal, and monitoring of actual status against a plan is required to steer and adjust the process.

  • We are very please to present you the detailed analysis of Management Aptitude Test held on September 04, 2005 on various centres all over India. This year also the AIMA MAT tradition continue, there were five sections each containing 40 questions. These 200 questions, to be solved in a time span of 150 minutes. No sectional time limits were mentioned. While there was 1 mark allotted for each correct answer, no quantification was done for negative marking. Thus, while solving the paper students had to concentrate more on accuracy....

  • This book is written for engineers who work on pipelines, risers and piping. It summarizes the author’s 18 years research and engineering experience at universities, classification societies and design offices. It is intended to develop this book as a textbook for graduate students, design guidelines for engineers and references for researchers. It is hoped that this book may also be used for design of offshore structures as it mainly addresses applied mechanics and desigdengineering. ...

  • The mitigation of earthquake-related hazards represents a key role in the modern society. The mitigation of such kind of hazards spans from detailed studies on seismicity, evaluation of site effects, and seismo-induced landslides, tsunamis as well as and the design and analysis of structures to resist such actions. The study of earthquakes ties together science, technology and expertise in infrastructure and engineering in an effort to minimize human and material losses when they inevitably occur.

  • The class will contain a mixture of standard lectures, guest speakers, and case discussions. Topics covered will span the real estate equity and debt markets, both public and private. The bulk of the course focuses on commercial or income-producing real estate, but we will spend some time studying the housing markets. Grading will be based on five assignments that will constitute 90% of your final grade. There are four longer cases and one shorter case. Case #3 constitutes 10% of your grade. The other four cases each constitute 20% of your grade. ...

  • With rapid advancements in computing power, computer modeling and simulations have become an important complement to experimentations in many areas of research as well as industrial applications. The Discrete Event Simulation (DES) method has received widespread attention and acceptance by both researchers and practitioners in recent years. The range of application of DES spans across many different disciplines and research fields.

  • Multicast services on public television include the World Channel, Create, V-Me, and MHz Worldview. Many public television stations have created their own multicast channels, including C-SPAN-like services that offer coverage of state and local government, educational channels, and cultural channels. A significant number of public radio stations have converted their analog transmission plants to digital technology. Public radio has not only been a leader in adopting multicast technology, NPR was a leader in developing the technology that permits multicast operation.

  • This paper describes the compilation of the first truly comprehensive historical public debt database (HPDD) covering gross government debt-to-GDP ratios for nearly the entire country membership of the IMF and spanning a long time period. The HPDD covers 174 countries and starts from 1880 for most G-7 countries and a few other advanced and emerging economies, and from 1920 for additional advanced and emerging economies. 2 For low-income countries (LICs), data coverage generally starts in 1970.

  • Many Modern Ecological problems such as rain forest destruction, decreasing marine harvests, and fire suppression are directly or indirectly anthropogenic. Zooarchaeology and Conservation Biology presents an argument that conservation biology and wildlife management cannot afford to ignore zooarchaeological research--the identification and analysis of faunal remains recovered from archaeological deposits. The editors contend that we can learn important lessons by studying long-term human and nonhuman influences on biota and ecosystems.

  • Many protein substrates of caspases are cleaved at noncanonical sites in comparison to the recognition motifs reported for the three caspase sub-groups. To provide insight into the specificity and aid in the design of drugs to control cell death, crystal structures of caspase-7 were determined in complexes with six peptide analogs (Ac-DMQD-Cho, Ac-DQMD-Cho, Ac-DNLD-Cho, Ac-IEPD-Cho, Ac-ESMD-Cho, Ac-WEHD-Cho) that span the major recognition motifs of the three subgroups.

  • A homologue of interleukin 18 has been identified from rainbow trout,Oncorhynchus mykiss. The trout IL-18gene spans 3.7 kb and consists of six exons and five introns, sharing the same gene organization with its human coun-terpart. The putative translated protein is 199 amino acids in length with no predicted signal peptide. Analysis of the multiple sequence alignment reveals a conserved ICE cut site, resulting in a mature peptide of 162 amino acids. The trout IL-18 shares 41–45% similarity with known IL-18 molecules and contains an IL-1 family signature motif....

  • We used a combined computer and biochemical approach to characterize human pyridoxine 5¢-phosphate oxidase (PNPO).The human PNPOgene is composed of seven exons and six introns, and spans approximately 8 kb.All exon/intron junctions contain the gt/ag consensus splicing site. The absence of TATA-like sequences, the presence of Sp1-binding sites and more importantly, the presence of CpG islands in the regulatory region of thePNPOgene are characteristic features of housekeeping genes.

  • The Arabidopsis FAE1 b-ketoacyl-CoA synthase (FAE1 KCS) catalyzes the condensation of malonyl-CoA with longchain acyl-CoAs. Sequence analysis of FAE1 KCS predicted that this condensing enzyme is anchored to a membrane by two adjacent N-terminal membrane-spanning domains. In order to characterize the FAE1 KCS and analyze its mechanism, FAE1 KCS and its mutants were engineered with a His6-tag at their N-terminus, and expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The membrane-bound enzyme was then solubilized and purified to near homogeneity on a metal affinity column.
