  • Clearly a more stratified approach to clinical trials would help identify those subgroups who appear to be the best responders to a particular intervention. To date however there is little to suggest that stratification on the basis of clinical characteristics successfully helps predict which drugs work best for which patients. There is a pressing need for the development of biomarkers with clinical utility, for mental health problems.

  • It has been suggested that migrants are not representative samples of their population of origin. Migrants are likely to be positively selected when they respond to pull factors in the country of destination and negatively selected in respond to push factors in the country of origin (Lee, 1966). With regards to health, this leads to the so called “healthy migrant effect”. In general, people that are younger and healthier are more willing and able to migrate (Jasso et al., 2004). The elderly and people that are ill tend to stay in their country of origin.

The principles of proteomic technology require stringent guidelines for the collection of clinical material, the application of analytical techniques, and for our interpretation of the data. In this review, we present an overview of the serum tumor markers in current use.

The length of the artificial chordae loops were determined with the measure of the distance between the correct plane of apposition on an adjacent normal non-prolapsing segment of the mitral leaflet and the respective PM (done with a More Suture Ruler device). Artificial chordae, with 4 loops each, were constructed of 4-0 PTFE GORE-TEX per the technique by von Oppel and Mohr.

  • Think-then-do requires you to work in short bursts of activity, with multiple cycles of Thinking and Doing. This helps you to avoid what I call “screen-blindness”. You may recognise the phenomenon if you've ever spent several hours working on a design. The longer you work, the more slowly you seem to get results. You find yourself sitting staring at the screen, pushing pixels around one way than back again. You lose touch with what it is you're trying to do. You're screen-blind.

  • Poverty is higher in remote rural areas and in inner cities, but the rural elderly are much more likely to be poor than those living in urban areas. Thirteen percent of rural elders 60 years and older were poor in 2000, compared with nine percent of elders living in a metro area [20]. Thus we expect to find the most evidence of impeded access for the poor elderly who reside in rural areas. We interact the proportion of elderly in poverty with the proportion in rural areas to include in the model.

Some have almost total discretion in selecting which audits to perform and when to perform them. Others are constrained by requirements in law to perform certain audits, such as an annual audit of the execution of the state budget. Results may need to be delivered by a specified date that may consume a substantial portion of the available audit resources, at least during certain periods of the year. Nevertheless, all SAIs need...

  • This economic and political situation in turn created a number of paradoxes around the German cinema(s) of the 1950s and 1960s, the 1970s and 1980s that require a 'revisionist' approach to film history, if they are to remain more than paradoxes. The New German Cinema of the 1970s and early 1980s, for instance, has been celebrated as an extraordinary flourishing of talent, but on closer inspection, the renaissance was short-lived, the films technically primitive, the market-strategies naive, while the efflorescence of creativity had its roots in governmental subsidy.
