  • A couple of years ago, my then eleven-year-old son ran his first marathon. I watched from the curb as he crossed mile twenty-four. Together we jogged the last few miles of the race, and when he finally saw the finish line, he sprinted toward it, leaving me behind. He made it look so easy. “Next year, Mom,” he shouted over his shoulder, “we cross this line together.” I am now training to run my second marathon and my son will be running his third. You just never know where inspiration will come from.

For students, the EOM is a useful guide for developing an integrated mental map for the entire field of supply chain and operations management. It has also proven useful as a reference for students preparing for case discussions, exams, and job interviews. It is particularly helpful for students new to supply chain and operations management and for international students who need precise definitions of specialized terms.

It helps make media content more directly manageable by computers, in an age where new information stored on paper, film, magnetic and optical media is reckoned to double every three years. What will be the benefits? Digital convergence presents new opportunities for businesses to unlock new markets, and for public bodies to improve the way they work.

As technical editors, though, it is our job to ensure that the material presented here is as accurate as possible, which forces us to (as much as possible) fully understand and grasp the technology being discussed. This presents incredible opportunities for learning and growth.

  • The popular favor with which former editions of this work have been received has required the production of such a vast number of copies, that the original electrotype plates from which it has heretofore been printed, have been completely worn out. The book has been re-produced in London, England, where six editions have already been necessary to supply the demand for it. In order to continue its publication to meet the demand which is still active in this country, it has been necessary, inasmuch as the original electrotype plates have become worn and useless, to re-set the work throughout.

  • Since the 1980s, the food and beverage industry has made children and adolescents the targets of intense and specialized food marketing and advertising efforts. The proliferation of electronic media, the deregulation of and declining support for public service advertising, and the booming economy of the 1990s all contributed to the transformation of children into a consumer group (Packaged Facts, 2000). In addition, the overabundance of certain foods in the U.S. food supply (such as corn and grains) along with decreased food production costs, allows food...

  • As I noted, the financial crisis has created an increasingly global outlook among policymakers. More and more, national regulators are influenced by policies fashioned abroad, and international bodies are stepping up policy coordination. At the same time, the extraordinary worldwide rise of as- set managers as financial intermediaries has created new opportunities for funds. Responding to these and other trends, the Institute readied a new initiative —ICI Global— launched early in fiscal year 2012.

This is the first study on Thailand which discusses the effect of the Thai government’s encouragement of individual savings by adopting special fund styles which give favourable tax treatment. • Facing the rapidly changing global business and different cross-country customer cultures, luxury can be understood as a special transnational type of culture. It represents a system of tangible (clothing, cars, buildings, etc.), as well as intangible components comprising ideals, expected behaviors, and beliefs in a group specific value system. In a global marketplace, there is no understanding of luxury conceivable which is nationally or regionally bound. However, it has to be stated that to some extent ethnocentrism and ―country-of-origin‖ effects may interfere.

If a member can pass any measure he or she wishes without needing anyone else to vote with him or her, then we call him or her a dictator. Thus member x is a dictator if and only if {x} is a winning coalition. A somewhat weaker but still very powerful member is one who can by himself or herself block any measure. If x is such a member, then we say that x has veto power. Thus x has veto power if and only if {x} is a blocking coalition. Finally if x...
