In October 2009, the Institute of Health Economics ( IHE ) staged a consensus
development conference to address key questions about the prevention, diagnosis,
and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder ( FASD ). Experts in the fi eld
presented scientifi c evidence to a “ jury ” about prevention and the social determinants
that may induce drinking during pregnancy, the importance of diagnosis,
the impact of FASD across a person ’ s lifespan, and the community supports
needed for those living with FASD, as well as their families.
Increasing numbers of children are recognised as experiencing an autistic
spectrum disorder, and educational provision for most of these children is found
within a mainstream school. Autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs) are also
sometimes referred to as pervasive development disorders because they pervade
so many areas of life and are intrinsic to that individual’s development.
The pace of research on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) can only be described as extraor‐
dinary as this volume shows. It is extremely difficult for any single professional to keep
abreast of all the developments in this area. This volume gathers together leading research‐
ers and expert clinicians from many different parts of the world to produce this "up-to-the-
minute" volume. It gives an in depth view of many areas of research which may be

When our son was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder at the
age of two and a half, like thousands of parents before us we
roller-coasted through the typical emotional responses: dismay,
grief, fear for our future, but finally relief. We conclusively had a
name for this condition that was filling our little boy’s life with
distress, impossible, repetitive and meaningless routines and such a
reluctance to respond to us that we were sure he was deaf.

Diseases of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) include a large spectrum of
acquired and inherited disorders mainly characterized by fluctuating muscle
weakness and fatigability of ocular, bulbar or limb muscles. Remarkable
progress has been made in our understanding of the pathogenesis of these
disorders in recent years.
In so few words, this poem beautifully captures what is so vital about early
emotional development and its importance in the human condition. It is the
willingness and ability to embrace fully and experience the broad spectrum of
emotional states, including those that are painful and distressing, that may be
key to mental health and adaptive personal development.
When the first edition of this book was published in 1993, I commented how
notions regarding Tourette’s syndrome (TS) had undergone recent dramatic
changes. Major shifts in views of the disorder included identification of its
complex spectrum of clinical features (including tics and specific behavioral
disorders, particularly obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder), establishment of heredity as a major etiological
factor, and recognition that, rather than a rare disorder, it occurs quite
commonly in the population....
