  • In Chapter 1 we mentioned that the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) uses Internet protocols. When the IMS needs a protocol to perform a particular task (e.g., to establish a multimedia session), the standardization bodies standardizing the IMS take the Internet protocol intended for that task and specify its use in the IMS. Still, no matter how simple this may sound, the process of choosing protocols to be used in the IMS can sometimes get tricky. Sometimes, the Internet protocol that is chosen lacks some essential functionality, or does not even exist at all. ...

It is especially arduous for new programmers given the pace of change and the ever-expanding size of the software engineering body of knowledge (www.swebok.org) that they must master. The authors of this book have found that experience and in-depth understanding are key factors in both programmer productivity and reliable software. This work has been almost entirely one of “internationalizing” a work mainly written for the UK. New matter has been added, especially in the areas of analyzers, level and flowmeters, and fieldbus. References to standards are various, ard British Standards are often referenced. International standards are in flux, and most standards bodies are striving to have equivalent standards throughout the world.
