  • Introduction I have introduced the Hair drawing tutorial so far, where I focused on some drawing techniques to achieve realistic hair look in a portrait. This time the tutorial is rather about drawing the whole portrait with all its parts enriched with useful tips. The tutorial aims at those of you, who are beginners or intermediate in drawing portraits and don't want to spend money for expensive artistic stuff. You need about four cheap pencils, charcoal, tissue or tortillion for blending, smudging eraser and ordinary eraser.

  • Materials: 2B, 3B or 4B pencil and paper. When you draw a portrait from life, you need to record the subtle variations of the features which make that individual's face unique. There are three basic stages in the creation of this image: 1. Using line drawing to organise the position, shape and proportion of the features. 2. Using softly shaded tone to create the form and texture of each feature. 3. Using larger areas of tone to unite all the elements of the portrait.

  • How the subject in a portrait poses is a big part of creating a great portrait. The rules that apply to photography can be directly transferred into this arena. The basics for framing a subject and planning the portrait are both basically the same. The best part about technology these days is the use of digital cameras, which allow you to capture many pictures and review them instantly. This can be great a tool for experimenting with different angles and poses. When in search for ideas for shots, the best way to be inspired is to look at other...

  • I know when I learn to do something for the first time that it helps if I can actually interact and "do" the activity at hand. Nothing could be truer then when learning to draw, especially when learning how to draw a face. If you just start drawing the eyes, a mouth, and a nose, you may come up with a pretty decent portrait; then again you may come out with something that looks like an abstract drawing. You might even come up with something that will change the shape of the modern art world. Even if that does...

  • Cartoon stars are easy to draw. It seems that everyone and their mother can draw a star, but this particular star is a bit different. He's got style, and he's got moxie. This pretty little star is extremely easy to make and you can learn how to draw it with just a few lines. Step 1 Make a C shape. It should be a slightly tilted C so that it seems as though it's lying down face up!! .Step 2 Now make another C joining the earlier one. What you should have now should look like a slightly tilted crescent moon. ...

  • Many thanks to Lianne Issa for this amazing tutorial. Check out her portraits gallery. Circulism Technique The colored pencil technique called circulism was invented in 1992 by Maggie Toole and i use it in all of my close up graphite portraits to try and achieve a realistic skin texture. The idea behind circulism is that when shading you draw no lines at all rather, the technique uses varied, unending, overlapped and intertwined circles, building transparent layers.

  • How I paint a digital pastel portrait? Generally I use Corel painter, a digital computer program, but I exploit its tools in a traditional way. First I open a blank white paper (file) and my reference photo. I prefer a big paper (over 2000.2000pix) because I have a lot of space to work and it is only in a big file that painting and drawing tools show there real natural characters. Step 1 I use a sketch or HB pencil tool and begin to draw. I start with the eyes and then nose and lips. .Step 2 In next stage I...

  • Figure 1: Image of face from a magazine cut out used as a reference for the portrait. I decided to create a sketch of the singer and actress Jennifer Lopez for this tutorial. The medium I used was pencil- HB, 2B, 3B, 4B. I chose to draw this image reference because of the eyes shown have a lot of detail as well as the composition is tilted slightly to one side. .Figure 2: the start of sketch. Firstly I drew a border around to have open space and make it look professional.

  • Draw There are a few basic tips to know that will help you with drawing mouths. I probably learned these tips around high school when a friend of mine was drawing a portrait for art class. There are just basic guidelines to follow when drawing the lips and teeth, and if you've attempted to draw a beautiful smile but the end result looked like a bunch of chicklets, then these rules are definitely for you as they were for my friend. Step 1: Keep It Simple! When drawing the mouth you should keep it even simpler than when drawing the...

  • This tutorial is very detailed, and involves a lot of patience. My drawings take a long time, and my greatest skill is not my drawing ability but my patience, as I have told a lot of deviants. By instructing you on how I do everything, I am giving you the opportunity to focus mainly on developing your patience. I've tried to use my own drawings as examples, when I can, and give useful links. Links to shopping websites are only given as an example of what to look for and average price, but not necessarily the best place to...

  • Cross drawings are as old as time. They have been around even before Christ and Christianity. The cross symbolizes life, immortality, union of the heavens and earth and the sun and stars. It's no wonder so many people select this image as a tattoo. It is arguably the most widely used image in both ancient and modern tattoos. Throughout history each culture has reinvented and redesigned this sacred image leaving us with many different versions. There are many variations of cross drawings which I will display below. Again as with tattoos and other drawings, personal taste and style rules all....
