  • I n this volume, Murray Rothbard has given us a comprehen- sive history of money and banking in the United States, from colonial times to World War II, the first to explicitly use the interpretive framework of Austrian monetary theory. But even aside from the explicitly Austrian theoretical framework under- girding the historical narrative, this book does not “look” or “feel” like standard economic histories as they have been writ- ten during the past quarter of a century, under the influence of the positivistic “new economic history” or “cliometrics.”...

  • As the financial system in most emerging economies is centred on banks, an important aspect of the development of bond markets is the impact on the banking system. One frequently heard worry is that bond markets could take business away from the banks. This raises some potential concerns for bank supervisors. On the other hand, if it means firms are less vulnerable to weaknesses in the banking system, corporate bond issuance can help central banks achieve steady economic growth.

  • One motivation that was lacking in the United States was the need to help finance the national government. 7 In fact, the absence of a sizable outstanding national debt posed a problem in designing a system that would not compete with commercial bank lending activities. Sensitivity was high, as well, to the possibility that a nationwide postal bank might drain funds from local to big-city financial markets.

  • The different views presented in the previous section suggest different aspects of how the SGP could affect capital market expectations about future developments, and hence prices for fixed government securities. If a strict interpretation of the SGP reduces budgetary flexibility and short-term growth prospects, it might lead to lower short or medium term interest rates. Conversely, if the central bank considers any breach or lax implementation of the Pact as an indication of an unduly expansionary fiscal policy leading to higher inflation, it could foreclose a monetary easing.

  • Savings banks are a legacy of pre-independence times. In most countries, they predated commercial banks in laying the groundwork for a modern banking system. In those days, they were established to encourage the monetisation of local economies by mobilising indigenous savings in the form of deposits. However, the model of postal savings banks was preferred to that of ordinary savings banks that have the same philosophy.

The real yield curves are derived from UK index-linked bond prices (section 1 below describes these instruments). By appealing to the Fisher relationship, the implied inflation term structure is calculated as the difference of instantaneous nominal forward rates and instantaneous real forward real rates (section 2 makes clear exactly what these terms mean).

  • Until the early 1980s, banking was largely a local business, reflecting the limits placed by the states on intra- and interstate branching. At year-end 1977, 20 states allowed statewide branching, and the remaining 30 states placed limits on intrastate branching.17 However, as the benefits of geo- graphic diversification became better understood, many states began to lift the legal constraints on branching. By mid-1986, 26 states allowed statewide branch banking, while only 9 restricted banks to a unit banking business. By 2002, only 4 states placed any limits on branching.

  • I came to view the process by which a central bank manages the interbank rate in a different light a few years ago in a paper on the zero bound on interest rate policy. 8 Obviously, at the zero bound it is no longer possible for a central bank to operate on the interest opportunity cost spread. The spread is zero. Nevertheless, a central bank still may be said to manage the interbank rate when it is zero. Thus, something other than open market operations and the interest opportunity cost spread must matter for the implementation of interest rate policy. Irving...
