  • The field of digital image segmentation is continually evolving. Most recently, the advanced segmentation methods such as Template Matching, Spatial and Temporal ARMA Processes, Mean Shift Iterative Algorithm, Constrained Compound Markov Random Field (CCMRF) model and Statistical Pattern Recognition (SPR) methods form the core of a modernization effort that resulted in the current text. This new edition of "Advanced Image Segmentation" is but a reflection of the significant progress that has been made in the field of image segmentation in just the past few years.

  • We study the challenges raised by Arabic verb and subject detection and reordering in Statistical Machine Translation (SMT). We show that post-verbal subject (VS) constructions are hard to translate because they have highly ambiguous reordering patterns when translated to English. In addition, implementing reordering is difficult because the boundaries of VS constructions are hard to detect accurately, even with a state-of-the-art Arabic dependency parser.

  • When I hear you give your reasons,” I remarked, “the thing always appears to me to be so ridiculously simple that I could easily do it myself, though at each successive instance of your reasoning I am baffled until you explain your process.” Dr. Watson to Sherlock Holmes A Scandal in Bohemia 0.1 Description This solutions manual contains solutions for all odd numbered problems plus a large number of solutions for even numbered problems. Of the 624 exercises in Statistical Inference, Second Edition, this manual gives solutions for 484 (78%) of them.

  • This paper presents a novel method to suggest long word reorderings to a phrase-based SMT decoder. We address language pairs where long reordering concentrates on few patterns, and use fuzzy chunk-based rules to predict likely reorderings for these phenomena. Then we use reordered n-gram LMs to rank the resulting permutations and select the n-best for translation.

  • This paper presents noisy-channel based Korean preprocessor system, which corrects word spacing and typographical errors. The proposed algorithm corrects both errors simultaneously. Using Eojeol transition pattern dictionary and statistical data such as Eumjeol n-gram and Jaso transition probabilities, the algorithm minimizes the usage of huge word dictionaries.

  • Automation, the use of robots in industry, has not progressed with the speed that many had hoped it would. The forecasts of twenty years ago are looking fairly silly today: the fact that they were produced largely by journalists for the benefit of boardrooms of accountants and MBA's may have something to do with this, but the question of why so little has been accomplished remains.

  • The main thrust is to provide students with a solid understanding of a number of important and related advanced topics in digital signal processing such as Wiener filters, power spectrum estimation, signal modeling and adaptive filtering. Scores of worked examples illustrate fine points, compare techniques and algorithms and facilitate comprehension of fundamental concepts. Also features an abundance of interesting and challenging problems at the end of every chapter.

  • “There is no such thing as an easy experiment, nor is there any substitute for careful experimentation in many areas of basic research and applied product development.” From Experimental Methods for Engineers by J. P. Holman Measurement is a multidisciplinary experimental science. Measurement systems synergistically blend science, engineering and statistical methods to provide fundamental data for research, design and development, control of processes and operations, and facilitate safe and economic performance of systems.

  • Modern physics is confronted with a large variety of complex spatial structures; almost every research group in physics is working with spatial data. Pattern formation in chemical reactions, mesoscopic phases of complex fluids such as liquid crystals or microemulsions, fluid structures on planar substrates (well-known as water droplets on a window glass), or the large-scale distribution of galaxies in the universe are only a few prominent examples where spatial structures are relevant for the understanding of physical phenomena....

  • SAS defines data mining as the process of uncovering hidden patterns in large amounts of data. Many industries use data mining to address business problems and opportunities such as fraud detection, risk and affinity analyses, database marketing, householding, customer churn, bankruptcy prediction, and portfolio analysis. The SAS data mining process is summarized in the acronym SEMMA, which stands for sampling, exploring, modifying, modeling, and assessing data.

  • The problem breaks down into two parts: defining the clusters (i.e., a list of members for each family) and building multiple alignments of the members. Previous approaches to construct comprehensive fam- ily databases have either concentrated on aligning short conserved regions, 6–8 often starting from the manually constructed clusters in Prosite, 9 or full domain alignments using either clusters that were derived manually from PIR2 or automatically. 10 An issue here is whether to aim for conserved regions only or whole domain alignments.

  • The apparent plural form in English, like the French plural form les mathématiques (and the less commonly used singular derivative la mathématique), goes back to the Latin neuter plural mathematica (Cicero), based on the Greek plural τα μαθηματικά (ta mathēmatiká), used by Aristotle (384–322 BC), and meaning roughly "all things mathematical"; although it is plausible that English borrowed only the adjective mathematic(al) and formed the noun mathematics anew, after the pattern of physics and metaphysics, which were inherited from the Greek.

  • While patterns of improvement can be observed as greater or lesser according to the background characteristics of students in this study, statistical analysis has meant that no generalisation regarding the kind of student most likely to improve can be reliably made. It is nevertheless interesting to consider the characteristics of each of the individuals who did show the greatest increase in their IELTS Test results. Of the 40 students who participated in this study, only eight managed to improve by one IELTS band in their Overall score.

  • With the ever increasing amounts of data in electronic form, the need for automated methods for data analysis continues to grow. The goal of machine learning is to develop methods that can automatically detect patterns in data, and then to use the uncovered patterns to predict future data or other outcomes of interest. Machine learning is thus closely related to the fields of statistics and data mining, but differs slightly in terms of its emphasis and terminology.
