Ralph Steinman discovered, in 1973, a new cell type that he called the dendritic cell. He
speculated that it could be important in the immune system and went on to test whether
dendritic cells could activate T cells, a cell type that has a key role in adaptive immunity and
develops an immunologic memory against many different substances. In cell culture
experiments, he showed that the presence of dendritic cells resulted in vivid responses of T
cells to such substances.
Special emphasis in this conversation will be placed on the role international mechanisms can play as relevant drivers of
behaviour change, notably those focusing on relevant sectors and able to produce information that is responsive to the
needs of national stakeholders to promote gender equality. Speakers will show how evidence on gender equality can be
used to hold actors to account at the international level and what challenges remain.
smartpower also learned from over seven years of message research in the area of renew-
able energy and energy efficiency that the “environmental” message is not the answer to
motivate consumers to purchase renewable energy technologies. Consumers already under-
stand the environmental benefits of solar power, but those benefits have not been persua-
sive enough to broaden market adoption.
One of the unique f iscal agency functions that the Reserve Banks provide
to the Treasury is a program through which the Reserve Banks invest
Treasury monies until needed to fund the government’s operations. The
Treasury receives funds from two principal sources: tax receipts and bor-
rowings. The funds that f low into and out of the government’s account
vary in amount throughout the year; for example, the account balance
tends to be relatively high during the April tax season.
Duplicate PHI has provided financing for capacity development in the private hospital sector in
some countries, thereby helping to alleviating consumer inconvenience generated by non-price rationing in
public hospitals. Only a few OECD countries have both long waiting times and high levels of population
covered by PHI. Australia has especially emphasised the role private cover plays as the main mechanism
for shifting demand away from overburdened public hospitals, while Ireland has instead placed more
emphasis on the role of the public system in addressing waiting concerns.
Other retailers would rather save the time and money
spent on trade shows and have sellers with wonderful
products contact them directly via email so that they can
concentrate on ‘minding the store.’ If you decide to
contact retailers directly be sure to send excellent photos
and pricing information. All of the retailers we spoke to
stressed the importance of the story behind the product.
The stories of your products, your producers and the
species you are working to conserve are very important in
building a relationship with green consumers.
The remit of the long-term care insurance funds is to ensure the supply of permanent care for
their insured and to eliminate shortcomings in quality. They consequently control the quality
of the care supplied. Nevertheless, their ability to ensure the supply of care is limited by the
fact that they have no appropriate influence on the creation, promotion or maintenance of an
LTC infrastructure. This task is assigned to the states. Furthermore, the LTC transfers are paid
by the insurance funds.
We expect the overall trend of declining household size to persist.
This is supported by an analysis of a panel of 38 countries over
time: by the year 2027 on average 3.8 people will live in a Turkish
household – still significantly more than in west European house-
Furthermore, we have assumed a slowdown in migration as push
and pull factors for moving are weakening.
Variation in the morphology of the adult male reproductive system among different groups of
Hymenoptera offer characteristics that help studies of behavior and the evolutionary history of
this group. The objective of this study was to describe the adult male reproductive system of the
wasp Polistes versicolor versicolor Olivier (Vespidae: Polistini). The reproductive systems were
dissected, fixed and embedded for light microscopy. In P. v. versicolor, the reproductive system
includes a pair of testes, each one with three fusiform follicles.
As life expectancy continues to rise, one of the
greatest challenges of public health is to improve
the quality of later years of life. The aim of this
present study was to analyze the quality of life
profile of the elderly across different demographic
and socioeconomic factors. A cross-sectional
study was carried out in two stages, involving
1,958 individuals aged 60 years or more. Health
related quality of life (HRQOL) was assessed using
the SF-36 questionnaire.
In addition to this, health measures
typically used in empirical studies may be affected by endogenous reporting behaviour. The outcome of a
direct question to an individual’s health status may depend on the labour market status of the respondent.
There may be economic motives or it may be the case that individual’s are inclined to give their answer
conform to social norms. Reporting health as a major determinant for inactivity is socially more accepted,
and eligibility conditions for some Social Security Benefits, notably Disability Insurance ...
Ultrasound cannot be heard by humans as the human ear does not pick up
frequencies above 20 kHz. Some animals, including dogs, dolphins and some
insects can hear ultrasound. Bats have the best hearing capabilities as they
not only hear ultrasound but they also generate it and can determine their
location from the echoes.
Ultrasonics is used in a wide variety of technical and medical applications.
The echo depth sounder is a device that uses the reflection of sound or
ultrasonics to determine the water depth.
In an era of information overload, it is not too radical to expect some social consciousness from the cinema
medium. All this while, there has been discussion about media‟s responsibility to the society. So why cinema
should be engaged only with creating leisure for its audience and not make them think critically? Popular
rhetoric and culture need to be challenged and cinema can do it effectively if it exhibits some sensitivity to
gender issues. This is because Hindi films now enjoy a huge international market in many South Asian and
The pre-service teachers in the writing methods course learned about the history of
writing instruction and writing theories, writers’ workshops and the use of various
types of journals. They were also introduced to the role of literature and methods for
integrating oral skills into literacy instruction. In addition to these materials, I
reviewed sample ESL student essays to illustrate techniques for providing feedback
on student writing.
Under GHI, the U.S. has joined multilateral efforts involving the United Nations and others to accelerate progress
toward achieving Millennium Development Goals 1(c), 4, 5, and 6. For example, GHI is building on existing U.S. sup-
port to the GAVI Alliance to include vaccines that protect against pneumococcal disease and rotavirus. Similarly, GHI
is strengthening already close U.S. collaboration with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, as
well as sustaining its leadership in and commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). The U.S.
Sustainable development has been one of the alarming concerns in the twenty-first
century. Anderson and Brooks (1996) discus how given the fact that “the supply of most
natural resources and environment services” are limited, it is of urgent concern to monitor
and control resource usage for one to even hope for continued economic activity in the years
to come. Furthermore, the incessant population and per capita growth exacerbates the
problem as they are indicative of the continuous growth in economic activity (Anderson &
The Committee evaluated the impact of its regulatory regimes on trade finance for low
income countries. For those countries, confirmed letters of credit are of specific importance.
Confirmed letters of credit provide exporters with additional protection against any losses
incurred from importers’ and issuing banks’ failure to meet their obligations of payments.
The United Kingdom Medicines Control Agency subsequently stopped this initiative citing it as unlawful promotion. However Herxheimer (2003) points out that in the absence of adequate independent funding patients organisations and lobbying groups are likely to continue to accept funding from pharmaceutical companies despite the clear ethical issues. He gives as examples the International Alliance of Patient Organisations and the Global Alliance of Mental Health Illness Advocacy which are both highly visible and linked financially to Big Pharma.
The Internet offers companies the opportunity to market goods and services to more customers than
ever before. Reaching these customers and developing their loyalty by delivering quality, convenience,
price competitiveness, and the right products and services, begins with a solid emarketing plan.
Whether you are making the move to emarketing or are already and emarketer, you will need to
develop a plan, implement the plan, be accountable for actual results, and utilize metrics that help
propel you towards e-business success.
Few people agree on how to plan projects. Often, much of the
time spent during planning is getting people to agree on how
the planning should be done. I think people obsess about plan-
ning because it’s the point of contact for many different roles in
any organization. When major decisions are at stake that will
affect people for months or years, everyone has the motivation
to get involved. There is excitement and new energy but also
the fear that if action isn’t taken, opportunities will be lost.
