Several hematopoietic growth factors (HGFs) have achieved widespread clinical
application. In the United States alone, more than US $5 billion per year of the health care
budget is spent on these factors. The first patients were treated with recombinant human
erythropoietin (rHuEPO, epoetin alfa, Epogen®) in 1985 and the first patients received
recombinant methionyl human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (r-metHuG-CSF,
filgrastim, Neupogen®) or recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colonystimulating
factor (rHuGM-CSF, sargramostim, Leukine® or Prokine®) in 1986.
Imatinib has also demonstrated targeted activity in other diseases, including gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), rare mesenchymal tumors of the GI tract (stomach and small intestine). The pathogenic molecular event for most patients with this disease is mutation of the proto-oncogene c-Kit, leading to the constitutive activation of this receptor tyrosine kinase without the binding of its physiologic ligand, stem cell factor. About 10% of GISTs encode activating mutations of the PDGFRα instead of c-Kit.
Therefore, ex vivo expansion of BMSCs is required to obtain a
sufficient number of transplantable cells. Since BMSCs require several kinds of supportive
factors for their growth, it is standard practice to use fetal bovine serum (FBS), while
autologous human serum (HS) and pooled allogeneic HS have also been used. It has been
suggested that FBS may not be favorable for clinical applications due to the possible risk of
contamination (prions, viruses, zoonosis) or immunological reactions against xenogeneic
serum antigens (Agata et al., 2009).
Tumor angiogenesis is a complex process involving many different cell types that must proliferate, migrate, invade, and differentiate in response to signals from the tumor microenvironment. Endothelial cells (ECs) sprout from host vessels in response to VEGF, bFGF, Ang2, and other proangiogenic stimuli. Sprouting is stimulated by VEGF/VEGFR2, Ang2/Tie-2, and integrin/extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions.

This report is the result of a joint activity of DG RTD and DG JRC-IPTS, which
was launched in July 2000. The aim was to identify potential priorities for
future research areas in European food technology and food safety. This
should provide targeted information for decision-makers in DG Research in
order to set the appropriate priorities for future research programmes. The
main focus was initially set on advanced technology developments in the food
sector and on socio-economic factors, which are expected to have an impact
on the food producing industry.
While prominence in health policy greatly affects the size of the PHI market – in terms of
population coverage, contribution to health financing or scope of government interventions – there is no
necessary link between the three factors. There are sizeable PHI markets in a range of health systems with
diverse mixes of public and private financing. The size of PHI markets may also result from consumer
demand for better choice and more comprehensive cover, even where there is little stimulation through
Relatively healthy older people, particularly those in the 60 to 70 age range, are likely to need services
similar to other adult health center populations. They may face challenges similar to their younger
counterparts; language barriers, limited health literacy, or cultural factors may impact health care access.
Yet for the older-old, these familiar challenges are compounded by additional barriers to optimal care and
quality of life. The disabled of any age often need supportive services to remain as healthy as possible and
in the community.
Neighborhoods may influence late-life health through a number of pathways (see Figure 1). The IOM
(1991) disablement framework, which distinguishes among disease, functional limitation, and disability, serves
as the starting point for this framework. We extend the IOM framework to include mortality and self-rated
general health status, which are both influenced by disease, functional limitation, and disability, as well as the
variety of individual and neighborhood factors that influence health in general.
