  • This book weaves strands of research that date back more than 20 years, to approximately 1990–1991. Although I worked at a futures commission merchant (that is, a brokerage firm) while in graduate school, that work involved financial futures exclusively. Deciding to leave that business in mid-October 1987 (thereby causing the 1987 crash), first for a stint in litigation support consulting and then on to academia at the Michigan Business School, I worked on research completely unrelated to futures markets.

  • The past fifty years have witnessed two simultaneous and accelerating trends: an explosive growth in population and a steep increase in resource depletion and environmental degradation. These trends have fueled the debate on the link between population and environment that began 150 years earlier, when Malthus voiced his concern about the ability of the earth and its finite resources to feed an exponentially growing population.

  • ‘Professions’ have been subject to a variety of theoretical schema that attempt to identify their unique characteristics or traits: the features that can be regarded as the basis for the discrimination between forms of occupational organization and control that are professional and those that are not (Saks, 1983; Abbott, 1988). This elaboration of the essential traits of professions is more than a professional discourse.

  • This book is written for anybody who is curious about nature and motion. Have you ever asked: Why do people, animals, things, images and space move? The answer leads to many adventures; this volume presents those due to the discovery that there is a smallest change value in nature. This smallest change value, the quantumof action, leads towhat is called quantum physics. In the structure of modern physics, shown in Figure 1, quantum physics covers three points; this volume covers the introduction to the point in the lower right: the foundations of quantum theory.

  • Cellobiohydrolases (exocellulases) hydrolyze cellulose processively, i.e. by sequential cleaving of soluble sugars from one end of a cellulose strand. Their activity generally shows an initial burst, followed by a pronounced slowdown, even when substrate is abundant and product accumulation is negligible.

  • This book is written for anybody who is intensely curious about nature andmotion.Have you ever asked: Why do people, animals, things, images and empty space move? The answer leads to many adventures, and this book presents one of the best of them: the search for a precise, unified and final description of all motion. The wish to describe all motion is a large endeavour. Fortunately, this large endeavour can be structured in the simple diagramshown in Figure 1.The final and unified description of motion, the topic of this book, corresponds to the highest point in the diagram.

  • The second phase in the development of an effective regional partnership involves moving toward a shared strategic framework—a shared mental model—of the opportunities ahead. This phase involves exploring where the region’s most promising economic opportunities lie. The third phase of development for a leadership team tests the team’s ability to make strategic decisions together. At this stage they must effectively answer “the How” question (“How do we decide among competing alternatives for investment?”).

  • This book is written for anybody who is curious about nature and motion. Curiosity about how people, animals, things, images and space move leads to many adventures. This volume presents the adventures one encounters when exploring everything electric. The story ranges from the weighing of electric current to the use of magnetic fields to heal bone fractures and up to the understanding of the human brain. In the structure of physics, shown in Figure 1, motion due to electricity is the most fascinating aspect of the starting point at the bottom.

  • The temperature-induced structural transitions of the full length Alzheimer amyloid b-peptide [Ab(1–40) peptide] and fragments of it were studied using CD and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The full length peptide undergoes an overall transition from a state with a prominent population of left-handed 31 (polyproline II; PII)-helix at 0C to a random coil state at 60C, with an averageDH of 6.8 ± 1.4 kJÆmol )1 per residue, obtained by fitting a Zimm–Bragg model to the CD data.

  • Cold shock proteins (CSPs) form a family of highly conserved bacterial proteins capable of single-stranded nucleic acid binding. They are suggested to act as RNA chaperones during cold shock inhibiting the formation of RNA secondary structures, which are unfavourable for transcription and translation.

  • The model presented is also related to the literature in limited risk sharing and participation constraints (Kehoe and Levine (1993), Kocherlakota (1996) and Zhang (1997)). More recently, Alvarez and Jermann (2000, 2001) showed that these participation constraints can be modelled as endogenous portfolio constraints, which they denote solvency constraints. Besides extending this strand of the literature for the case of heterogeneous beliefs, I solve this problem in continuous time for the …rst time, thus generalizing it to the case of in…nite possible states.

  • In this work we address the problem of unsupervised part-of-speech induction by bringing together several strands of research into a single model. We develop a novel hidden Markov model incorporating sophisticated smoothing using a hierarchical Pitman-Yor processes prior, providing an elegant and principled means of incorporating lexical characteristics.

  • It is possible that once efficient human-to-human transmission of H5N1 occurs certain countries may close their borders sporadically believing (rightly or wrongly) that this measure would be effective in reducing the spread of influenza. Screening (with quarantine measures) could be established at borders. If justified by risk/benefit analysis it may be advisable to request employees to consider postponing non-essential travel outside Canada when the pandemic starts. Arrangements may also be required for employees who are stranded outside of the country because borders are closed.

  • Apurinic⁄apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE), an essential DNA repair enzyme, initiates the base excision repair pathway by creating a nick 5¢ to an abasic site in double-stranded DNA. Although the Chinese hamster ovary cells remain an important model for DNA repair studies, the Chinese hamster APE (chAPE1) has not been studied in vitro in respect to its kinetic characteristics.
