  • When we talked to colleagues and friends during the last few months about our e-business book project, many of them asked whether we were arriving too late with this book. They reminded us that the Internet bubble had burst three years ago and that most online companies had since gone bankrupt. This is certainly true, yet we nonetheless believe that it is indeed a very timely moment to publish a book on e-business and strategy.

  • The purpose of this book is fairly simple, to introduce and reflect on some of the key writers, ideas, models and approaches in strategic management. Chapter one is brief overview of how strategy got here. Whittington’s work is used to give an overview of different views (or even philosophies) of strategy positioned for us in a framework. We use Whittington’s (2001) model of strategy as our base model. Whittington’s classical, evolutionary, processual and systemic strategy offers us a reference point as well as the underpinning for different ways of dealing with strategy....

  • This paper presents a novel approach for leveraging automatically extracted textual knowledge to improve the performance of control applications such as games. Our ultimate goal is to enrich a stochastic player with highlevel guidance expressed in text. Our model jointly learns to identify text that is relevant to a given game state in addition to learning game strategies guided by the selected text.

  • The harms to individuals, families, communities and Australian society as a whole from alcohol, tobacco and other drugs are well known. For example, the cost to Australian society of alcohol, tobacco and other drug misuse1 in the financial year 2004–05 was estimated at $56.1 billion, including costs to the health and hospitals system, lost workplace productivity, road accidents and crime. The overarching approach of harm minimisation, which has guided the National Drug Strategy since its inception in 1985, will continue through 2010–2015.

  • In text categorization, feature selection (FS) is a strategy that aims at making text classifiers more efficient and accurate. However, when dealing with a new task, it is still difficult to quickly select a suitable one from various FS methods provided by many previous studies. In this paper, we propose a theoretic framework of FS methods based on two basic measurements: frequency measurement and ratio measurement. Then six popular FS methods are in detail discussed under this framework.

  • This paper presents a framework for the definition of monotonic repair rules on chart items and Lexicalized Tree Grammars. We exploit island representations and a new level of granularity for the linearization of a tree called c o n n e c t e d routes. It allows to take into account the topology of the tree in order to trigger additional rules. These local rules cover ellipsis and common extra-grammatical phenomena such as self-repairs. First results with a spoken language corpora are presented. ...

  • This paper presents PARADISE (PARAdigm for Dialogue System Evaluation), a general framework for evaluating spoken dialogue agents. The framework decouples task requirements from an agent's dialogue behaviors, supports comparisons among dialogue strategies, enables the calculation of performance over subdialogues and whole dialogues, specifies the relative contribution of various factors to performance, and makes it possible to compare agents performing different tasks by normalizing for task complexity. ...

  • Pipeline computation, in which a task is decomposed into several stages that are solved sequentially, is a common computational strategy in natural language processing. The key problem of this model is that it results in error accumulation and suffers from its inability to correct mistakes in previous stages. We develop a framework for decisions made via in pipeline models, which addresses these difficulties, and presents and evaluates it in the context of bottom up dependency parsing for English. We show improvements in the accuracy of the inferred trees relative to existing models. ...

  • This paper presents a framework for unsupervised natural language morphology induction wherein candidate suffixes are grouped into candidate inflection classes, which are then arranged in a lattice structure. With similar candidate inflection classes placed near one another in the lattice, I propose this structure is an ideal search space in which to isolate the true inflection classes of a language. This paper discusses and motivates possible search strategies over the inflection class lattice structure. ...

  • Currently several grammatical formalisms converge towards being declarative and towards utilizing context-free phrase-structure grammar as a backbone, e.g. L F G and PATR-II. Typically the processing of these formalisms is organized within a chart-parsing framework. The declarative character of the formalisms makes it important to decide upon an overall optimal control strategy on the part of the processor. In particular, this brings the ruleinvocation strategy into criticalfocus: to gain maximal processing efficiency, one has to determine the best way of putting the rules to use.

In Japanese, IFTs can be derived a u t o m a t i c a l l y t h r o u g h syntactical constraints. To generate appropriate expressions, language-specific communication strategies related to DP values should be given a priori. The whole process is performed in a unification-based framework.
