  • To elucidate the architectural principle of protein structure, we focused on sequestration from solvent, which is a common characteristic of folding and self-associative precipitation. Because protein solubility can be regarded as a basis for the potential ability to sequester from solvent, we assume that poorly soluble proteins tend not only to precipitate, but also to form solution structures.

  • This chapter introduces basic concepts needed for the study and description of morphologically complex words. Since this is a book about the particular branch of morphology called word- formation, we will first take a look at the notion of ‘word’. We will then turn to a first analysis of the kinds of phenomena that fall into the domain of word-formation, before we finally discuss how word-formation can be distinguished from the other sub-branch of morphology, inflection.

  • What this book is about and how it can be used: The existence of words is usually taken for granted by the speakers of a language. To speak and understand a language means - among many other things - knowing the words of that language. The average speaker knows thousands of words, and new words enter our minds and our language on a daily basis. This book is about words. More specifically, it deals with the internal structure of complex words, i.e. words that are composed of more than one meaningful element....

  • Ethan Marcotte wrote an introductory article about the approach, “Responsive Web Design,” for A List Apart. It stems from the notion of responsive architectural design, whereby a room or space automatically adjusts to the number and flow of people within it: “Recently, an emergent discipline called “responsive architecture” has begun asking how physical spaces can respond to the presence of people passing through them.

  • The study of the formation and early evolution of stars has been an ever growing part of astrophysical research. Traditionally, often in the shadow of its big brothers (i.e., the study of stellar structure, stellar atmospheres and the structure of galaxies), it has become evident that early stellar evolution research contributes essentially to these classical fields. There are a few new items on the list of traditional astrophysical studies, some of which are more related to features known from the extreme late stages of stellar evolution.

  • The Sixth Edition of Dr. Haines's best-selling neuroanatomy atlas features a stronger clinical emphasis, with significantly expanded clinical information and correlations. More than 110 new images--including MRI, CT, MR angiography, color line drawings, and brain specimens--highlight anatomical-clinical correlations. Internal spinal cord and brainstem morphology are presented in a new format that shows images in both anatomical and clinical orientations, correlating this anatomy exactly with how the brain and its functional systems are viewed in the clinical setting.

  • Formations of endogenous ore deposits and mineralization are widely distributed in Vietnam. Detailed studies allow for distinguishing 30 ore formations representing 9 groups of mineral raw - materials: Cr, Ti, Fe, Sn - W, Mo, Pb - Zn, Au, Sb - Hg. Three of presented formations are of magmatic affiliation, one is pegmatitic, three others belong to skarn mineralization and the remaining ones are of hydrothermal - volcanic and controversial origin. Three metallogenic epochs can be distinguished: Proterozoic, Palaeozoic and Mesozoic - Cainozoic.

  • Nanotechnology has received tremendous interest over the last decade, not only from the scientific community but also from a business perspective and from the general public. Although nanotechnology is still at the largely unexplored frontier of science, it has the potential for extremely exciting technological innovations that will have an enormous impact on areas as diverse as information technology, medicine, energy supply and probably many others. The miniaturization of devices and structures will impact the speed of devices and information storage capacity.

  • The domain is secondary to our agenda: our main goal is not to build a learning system for furniture design. Rather, flat-pack furniture design provides a test case for system development to investigate design critiquing. It is an interesting domain where students encounter many structural and spatial design issues as they make stable furniture out of flat materials. For this reason, furniture making is often used as an early exercise for first-year design and architecture students.

  • DNA transactions in eukaryotes require that proteins gain access to target sequences packaged in chromatin. Further, interactions between distinct nucleoprotein complexes are often required to generate higher-order structures. Here, we employed two prokaryotic site-specific recombination systems to investigate how chromatin packaging affects the assembly of nucleoprotein structures of different complexities at more than 30 genomic loci. The dynamic nature of chromatin permitted protein–DNA and DNA–DNA interactions for sites of at least 34 bp in length.
