  • The use of respirators in the health care setting is a relatively new but important step forward in the efforts to prevent the transmission of tuberculosis (TB). Air purifying respirators provide a barrier to prevent health care workers from inhaling Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The level of protection a respirator provides is determined by the efficiency of the filter material and how well the facepiece fits or seals to the health care worker’s face. A number of studies have shown that surgical masks will not provide adequate protection in filtering out the TB organism.

Detection and evaluation of leaking underground storage tanks and epidemiological health studies aimed at qualifying and quantifying our “cleanroom” image were in their infancy stages and Cal- OSHA had just completed the first in-depth study of the industry’s chemical processes and associated industrial hygiene exposures....

  • Design guidelines for predicting the axial capacity of piles in sand have long been the source of considerable debate due to the geotechnical profession’s inadequate understanding of pile behavior. Analytical studies, alone, cannot resolve the uncertainties in axial capacity predictions due to the complex nature of pile behavior in sand. This chapter presents some of the factors which occur during installation and loading of pipe piles in sand, along with their potential impact on axial capacity....

  • A comparative analysis of service statistics found that the utilization of services from health facilities doubled in Site A and increased ten-fold in Site B, compared to the change in utilization in Site C. Again, comparing the two intervention sites, Site B experienced six times greater utilization of services than Site A. Thus, for most key indicators, Strategy II produced greater improvements than did Strategy I. On the basis of study findings, the following recommendations are made.

  • More precisely, the question to be addressed is whether there are substitutes available at less cost than the true cost of Chemical A. Substitutes that meet this requirement will not always be available. For instance, "retro-fitting" existing production facilities in order to employ substitutes is, as a rule, likely to be quite expensive. The availability of financially viable alternative actions may be higher at the design stage of a process or product's development.

Rules for the spatial effects by number, geographic location, and area (as appropriate) of application of the management measures on the annual hydrograph and nutrient and sediment yield curves will be developed.

  • Finally, a few words of caution. Vision is given a prominent position in aesthetics, often dominating the other senses. The present approach is similar in this, but it should be stressed that hearing, touch, smell, and even taste all are implicated in perceptual processing. The vision system in the brain is linked to the other sensory systems, which permits interaction at an early processing stage. At a later stage, visual information is integrated with other kinds of sensory information to produce multimodal perceptual experiences and mental imagery....

  • Treatment should be performed with the highest fluence the skin can tolerate. Studies have shown that the percentage hair loss is fluence-dependent, with higher percentages of hair loss at higher fluences. Each skin type has its own threshold fluence at which pigmentation changes occur. To mini- mize hypo- or hyperpigmentation, lower fluences than those suggested above should be used while gaining clinical experience. With multiple pulsing the incidence of pigment changes increases without an increase in efficacy. For this reason, double and triple pulsing are not recommended.

  • In this little book I have endeavoured to maintain the simplicity which is the ideal of this series. It is more difficult, however, to be simple in a topic which, even in its illustrations, demands of the reader more or less facility in the exploration of his own mind. I am persuaded that the attempt to make the matter of psychology more elementary than is here done, would only result in making it untrue and so in defeating its own object. In preparing the book I have secured the right and welcomed the opportunity to include certain more popular...

  • The relationship between air pollution and premature mortality is most often studied using time-series analysis of daily observations of the number of deaths and pollution levels. These studies capture the effects of short-term exposure to pollution on the probability of dying. The underlying assumption is that there is a distribution of susceptibility to the effects of air pollution in any population. People who are in a weakened physical state or who have a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or cardio-pulmonary problems are thought to be the most vulnerable.

We also decided to model this complementary case study on the core case study, and use the second study to validate and broaden the findings of the first.

  • Confronted with painting as a predetermined discipline, the artist escapes its dictates by adding physical depth, in the same way that Donald Judd abandoned his early painting in favour of creating works of art which were more tangible and concrete. Judd creates a situation where colour is isolated from its objectness by the reflective and refractive nature of the materials chosen, while Schnabel seeks to harness the physical qualities of the available materials in his work.
