An offer was made the Society to establish the proposed school in the
then young and aspiring village of Worthington, Ohio. A strong effort
was being made to constitute that town the Capital City of Ohio, but its
near neighbor Columbus won out. In Worthington there had been
established in 1808 a literary and scientific school known as the
Worthington Academy. This was successfully conducted until 1819,
when a new charter was granted it, with title Worthington College. One
We now live in an era where writers can both create and publish their own work and
make a living out of doing what they love.
Contained within Secrets of Successful Writers are interviews I conducted with fifty
authors. They talk about their writing, how they became published authors and how
they market themselves in this brave new era of ebooks. These interviews came about
as a result of a series of interviews I conducted on my website www.darrellpitt.com
Nonprofit organizations are now continuously being challenged to be more strategic in
their communications efforts. Communications activities must add up to more than a
series of isolated events such as the dissemination of an occasional publication or press
release. Being strategic requires that nonprofits be more deliberate, innovative, savvy,
and less reactive in their communications practice. Nonprofits are encouraged to
regard communications as essential to their overall success and integrate it throughout
More generally, private participation can successfully improve access to
infrastructure services (telecommunication, energy, transport, water), where workable
competition can be introduced, for example in many telecommunication systems. In non-
competitive markets, case by case decisions are required to assess whether public or
private provision may be preferable depending, in particular, on whether more risks for
commercial performance can be shifted effectively to the private sector.
A technology is only a tool.
No matter how creative its design, innovative its approach, or impressive its performance,
a technology is still defined (according to Webster) as “a manner of accomplishing
The successful adoption of a technology into the community of those who rely on it
to conduct business is a complicated journey—one that starts with the unyielding
work of designers who see something that others don’t.
The science of ecology and the practice of management are critical to
our understanding of the Earth’s ecosystems and our efforts to conserve
them. This book attempts to bridge the gap between ecology and natural
resource management and, in particular, focuses on the discipline of
plant ecology as a foundation for vegetation and wildlife management.
It describes how concepts and approaches used by ecologists to study
communities and ecosystems can be applied to their management. Guy
Recently, reflecting the growing needs of young people who intend to become more
competent in the English language and plan to go abroad for study and work, not only
universities but also more high schools in Japan have started to conduct preparation courses
for English proficiency tests such as TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and
TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication), in addition to ordinary English
Improving health outcomes through strengthened platforms and systems is at the core of the Initiative. This vision
of sustainable progress is only possible thanks to the demonstrable improvements in the health sector over the past
decade. Less than ten years ago, neither the woman nor her two children in our story would have stood a chance of
survival. At that time, a woman in her condition could not have hoped to access life-sustaining HIV treatment, let alone
the services that would prevent her child from being infected by HIV.
In some countries, adolescents are less likely than adults to obtain skilled care
before, during and after childbirth.
WHO’s recommendations for increasing the use of skilled antenatal, childbirth and postpartum care are informed
by one graded study, one ungraded study, existing WHO guidelines and the collective experience and judgment of a
panel of experts. The studies were conducted in Chile and India. One intervention was a home visit programme for
adolescent mothers. Another was a cash transfer scheme contingent upon health facility births.
At Facebook, everything we do is about making the world
more open and connected. This has a profound impact on the
way people communicate and interact. We are continually
developing authentic ways for people to connect with one
another as well as with the businesses, brands and institutions
they care about, both on Facebook and across the web.
Facebook allows marketers to stay connected with people
throughout their day whether they are on their computers or
mobile devices, at home or at work, watching TV or shopping
Behind every wood solution from Steelcase, is a deep commitment to understanding
our customers’ needs. We observe, we question, we listen and we learn about how
people work. Why are we so inquisitive? Because this knowledge enables us to design
office solutions that create a better work experience. We’ll even tailor a solution if one
of our standard products isn’t exactly what you desire. The result is beautiful wood
solutions that can help to attract and retain valuable knowledge workers and help
them to be more effective and efficient.
This session aims to benefit from the presence of both gender and development cooperation experts. Participants are
encouraged to reflect on the above issues in the context of a world faced with new challenges and a rapidly changing
development landscape. The question of how to best ensure gender equality and the empowerment of women given the
multiplicity of actors and new approaches is one question which could be discussed.
Our paper proceeds as follows. Section 2 reviews our data, and describes the economic state
variables and risk factors used in the study. Section 3 reviews the investor types considered in
our study, and provides details on the methodology. Section 4 presents the main empirical results,
while Section 5 conducts an attribution analysis and Section 6 provides robustness results. Finally,
Section 7 concludes. Details on data sources, variable construction, and additional robustness
results are provided in a series of appendices available from the web....
Generally, empirical studies have considered the effect of subsidies on health insurance coverage. But mandates to obtain health insurance often include monetary penalties for noncompliance, and thus a mandate with a penalty also affects the relative price of health insurance by making it costlier to be uninsured. In this respect, the health economics literature is an obvious starting point to search for information about the possible effects of mandates on coverage choices.
Previous interventions had been aimed at mothers of children, using participation in the
WIC program as a channel for communication. The formative research and conversations
with the African American community suggested that grandmothers were more frequently
the chitterlings preparers and would serve as role models to younger women. Thus, the
primary target audience was women who prepare chitterlings — older, African American
women who, as grandmothers, are often also caregivers for infants.
The introductory section of the BFI DVD ‘A Personal Journey through American Movies with Martin
Scorsese’ provides a useful starting point for the study of genre. Beginning with the section ‘The
Director as Storyteller’, Scorsese discusses how the genre system developed in the earliest days of
the Hollywood Studio System. He then proceeds to explore three of the principal genres of
Hollywood filmmaking: the Gangster film; the Western and the Musical.
Turkey’s per capita GDP is catching up and in purchasing power
parity had reached 30% of the EU-27 average in 2006. The
distribution of this income is very broad, both across households
and across regions. The average household income in the city of
Trabzon in the north-east of Turkey was only 30% of the country
average (2003) whereas incomes in Ankara and Istanbul were 65%
and 85% higher than the average.
To represent the specific behaviors of this reflection,
a schematic model was sought that simultaneously covered
health promotion and the Health Policy for the Elderly,
with a view to adopting actions for greater awareness,
resulting in attitudes of empowerment and suggestions
for gerontogeriatric nursing actions. Nola Penders Health
Promotion Model(10) was used. Through a chart, it
manages to represent the behaviors that can lead to health
Nola Penders Model was developed in the United
States in the 1980s, but was little explored in Brazil.
