  • Gas chromatography – chromatography using a gas as the mobile phase and a solid/liquid as a stationary phase – In GC, the analytes migrate in the gas phase, so their boiling point plays a role – GC is generally applicable to compounds with masses up to about 500 Da and with ~60 torr vapor pressure at room temp (polar functional groups are trouble) Supercritical fluid chromatography – chromatography using a supercritical fluid as the mobile phase and a solid/liquid as a stationary phase – In SFC, the analytes are solvated in the supercritical fluid – SFC is applicable to a much ...

  • The aim of Caffeine and chlorogenic acid separation from raw coffee beans using supercritical CO2 in water was to develop new process for extracting and separating hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds from coffee beans using supercritical CO in water. In this work, experiments and simulation of the process has been conducted. Chlorogenic acid and caffeine from coffee beans were used as model compounds of hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds, respectively.

  • Shiitake mushroom contains several therapeutic actions such as antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, carried by the diversity of its components. In the present work, extracts from shiitake mushroom were obtained using different extraction techniques: high-pressure operations and low-pressure methods. The high-pressure technique was applied to obtain shiitake extracts using pure CO2 and CO2 with co-solvent in pressures up to 30 MPa.

  • Petroleum mixtures consist primarily of relatively unreactive complex hydrocarbons covering a wide boiling range. Such mixtures are difficult to separate by most analytical techniques. Therefore, the petroleum industry has for many years played a leading role in the development of chromatographic methods of analysis. Since the last book specifically concerned with chromatographic analysis of petroleum appeared 15 years ago, numerous advances have been made including developments in liquid and supercritical fluid chromatography, ...

  • This text is the published version of many of the talks presented at two symposiums held as part of the Southeast Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society (SERMACS) in Knoxville, TN in October, 1999. The Symposiums, entitled Solution Thermodynamics of Polymers and Computational Polymer Science and Nanotechnology, provided outlets to present and discuss problems of current interest to polymer scientists. It was, thus, decided to publish both proceedings in a single volume.

  • Ideally, multiple traits would be considered for selection, such as milk yield, AFC and longevity, to consider both production and functionality. Such a plan might be difficult to implement quickly, so, for more simplicity, evaluation could initially be based on ‘likeability’ scores assigned by the farmer. To evaluate likeability, farmers would be asked to assign an animal a score of from 1 to 5, where 1 and 5 indicate an extremely poor or good cow, respectively. Such a trait would comprise a mixture of productivity, reproduction and health.

  • The gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) plays dual roles in hwnan physiology: digestion and uptake of nutrients and the more daunting task of maintaining immune homeostasis (protecting the body from potentially harmful microbes, while inducing tolerogenic responses to innocuous food, commensals and self-antigens). The unique architecture ofthe GI tract facilitates both ofthese functions; multiple levelsofinfolding results in an immense overall surface area that allows maximal nutrient absorption while housing the largest nwnber ofimmune cells in the body.

At the same time, we shift gears and envisage counting problems at a new level of generality.

  • This book presents some apparent divergences, that is, its content branches off in many directions. This fact is reflected in the titles of the chapters and the methods applied in discussing the problems of physical adsorption. It is not accidental. I aimed to prove that the problems of physical adsorption, in spite of the ramified research fields, have similar or identical roots. These statements mean that this book is 1) diverse, but still unified and 2) classical, but still modern. The book contains monographs at a scientific level and some chapters include parts that can be used by Ph.
