So many slighting remarks have been made of late on the use of teaching grammar as
compared with teaching science, that it is plain the fact has been lost sight of that grammar is
itself a science. The object we have, or should have, in teaching science, is not to fill a child's

The book is divided into four main parts: key issues in researching language learning/teaching, data collection, data analysis and writing up research. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies are discussed, alongside popular mixed-methods approaches, such as triangulated studies, thus covering many of the methods commonly employed in the field.
This book contains Earl Stevick’s analysis of the strategies used by seven successful language learners and the implications for becoming a more successful language learner yourself. There are extensive excerpts from taped interviews with the seven learners,

The main objective of the doctoral research was to improve the performance in
Physics and Mathematics, at Advanced Level Examinations, of two rural girls’
secondary schools in Arua (Muni and Ediofe) through application of e-learning.
Both schools have no functional science laboratories and libraries. They also
have no qualified and committed teachers who can competently teach at that
level of education. The research included participatory action research
methodology and the use of interactive multimedia CD-ROMs for Physics and
Mathematics as the main course delivery platform.

The current paper examines the journal entries and class discussions of 12 pre-service
teachers who were enrolled on a writing methods course that I have been teaching as
part of an ESL teacher preparation program for the last 5 years. Students take this
three credit course as an elective toward a master’s program in Instructional Systems
Development with concentration on ESL/Bilingual Education. The program consists
of 36 hours on ESL methodologies, cross-cultural communication, second language
acquisition, assessment and evaluation and instructional systems design.
The idea for this book originated during a conversation in December
2006 with C. Deborah Laughton, Publisher, Methodology and Statistics, at
The Guilford Press, about the challenges of teaching research seminars or
other courses in which students conduct a thesis project. These students
could be senior undergraduates in advanced programs, such as honors
or specialization, or first-year graduate students.
