The world faces serious difficulties in obtaining the energy that will be needed in coming decades for a growing population, especially given the problem of climate change caused by fossil fuel use. This book presents a view of nuclear energy as an important carbon-free energy option. It discusses the nuclear fuel cycle, the types of reactors used today and proposed for the future, nuclear waste disposal, reactor accidents and reactor safety, nuclear weapon proliferation, and the cost of electric power.
In the early days of Technical writing, people with scientific and Technical backgrounds were given writing assignments for which They weren't prepared or qualified. Not surprisingly, much of the writing they produced was often very poorly composed, stilted, and boring.
Organizations such as the United States Air Force, which encompass a wide variety of operational, technical, and business-oriented activities, are complex. And the task of ensuring the continued availability of individuals having the competencies required to lead those activiti
Measurement of background radiation for epidemiologic purposes involves the use of technics capable of detecting geographic variation in exposure to external and internal natural sources of radioactivity at low levels. Methods for determining dose over a period of time are necessary and instruments are being developed. The methodology of this problem is analyzed.
This practical guide for network and system administrators
introduces SNMP along with the technical background to use it
effectively. But the main focus is on practical network
administration: how to configure SNMP agents and network
management stations, how to use SNMP to retrieve and modify
variables on network devices, how to configure management
software to react to traps sent by managed devices. Covers all
SNMP versions through SNMPv3.
This book presents a high level technical overview of the emerging technologies o
optical communications and networking systems. It is intended as an introduction to
the field for optical communication systems or network professionals, such as higher
degree research students, academics and design engineers. Although it is intended for
professionals who already have some technical background, it is nevertheless relevan
to anyone wishing to understand optical communication systems or networks....
Ever since the first edition appeared in 1963, the book has consistently maintained
a unique appeal both for students (graduate and undergraduate) and practitioners
because of its clarity and commonsense presentation. Straddling the educational
and professional markets, the book requires little if any background in finance and
accounting and provides an accessible, self-contained overview of the essential
financial management concepts and tools.
This valuable guide is a complete day trading course (with a companion workbook) that walks novice traders through all the day trading opportunities. The Day Trader's Course is packed with basic technical skill, proven winning strategies, and essential background. Lewis Borsellino reveals when to buy and when to sell, and shows readers how to identify when "it's over" for a particular stock, option, or future. Drawing from his considerable experience, he identifies the rules that every trader should follow....
Government information is often not mobile friendly;
increasing accessibility (especially of local information) is
one way libraries can serve diverse users. Some libraries
are providing services of this type in a desktop-oriented
way already. This chapter discusses tools that can be used
to make such sites more mobile friendly, including ones
requiring little funds or technical background.
The most obvious way to leverage patrons’ mobile
devices is to put content on the Web.
Science progresses by a symbiotic interaction between theory and experiment: theory is
used to interpret experimental results and may suggest new experiments; experiment
helps to test theoretical predictions and may lead to improved theories. Theoretical
Chemistry (including Physical Chemistry and Chemical Physics) provides the concep-
tual and technical background and apparatus for the rationalisation of phenomena in the
chemical sciences. It is, therefore, a wide ranging subject, reflecting the diversity of
molecular and related species and processes arising in chemical systems.
In this chapter we aim to explain the principles and evolutions of the testing and type approval of the GSM Mobile Equipment (ME). After having recalled the context at the end of the 1980s (paragraph 17.2), we outline the technical background (paragraph 17.3) and we explain the first step of the type approval, i.e. the ‘‘interim type approval’’(paragraph 17.4). Then we describe the TBR regime (paragraph 17.5) and how it evolved to cope with phase 2 (paragraph 17.6) and phase 21 (paragraph 17.7)....
For investments to provide local benefits, mechanisms need to be in place
ensuring technical and economic viability, consistency with local land use plans
and taxation regimes, and transfers of assets from nonviable projects. This
should also include the scope for investment and associated land governance
issues in countries’ broader development strategies that identify areas or crops
where investment can provide the highest benefits based on agro-ecological
endowments and existing land use intensity.
While managers designed traditional methodologies in an effort to control projects, the technical community
gave birth to agile methodologies in response to their frustrations with traditional management (or lack thereof)
and the resulting impact on their products and morale. For example, the principles of XP are focused almost
entirely on the development process. While the technical community has championed these principles, very
little has been written about the management side of agile development projects.
The health status of prisoners is generally much poorer than that of the general population, and
women’s health needs can be seriously neglected in a male-dominated prison system. Many
women in prison have a background of physical and sexual abuse and of alcohol and drug
dependence. Many did not receive adequate health care before incarceration. Women in prison
generally have more mental health problems than women in the general population. This
frequently stems from prior victimization.
This project report is an analysis of the current situation, needs, and potential medium-and long-term strategies to develop agricultural research and extension in Viet Nam. The report provides a long-term road map for agriculture research and extension assistanceand it will be used as a basis for the development of a forthcoming ADB technical assistance, which will in turn be used as a basis for a proposed investment loan in Agricultural Science and Technology.
Navigating the Internet requires using addresses and corresponding names that identify the
location of individual computers. The Domain Name System (DNS) is the distributed set of
databases residing in computers around the world that contain address numbers mapped to
corresponding domain names, making it possible to send and receive messages and to access
information from computers anywhere on the Internet.
Security concepts are organized based on business needs, as opposed to tech-nological similarity. We’ve tried to focus on how these concepts relate in terms of practical business functionality. For example, network monitoring is discussed in Part 1, "Managing Security " rather than in a section on intrusion detection. For people with a technical background, this method of organization may seem strange. But one of our goals is to change the way people think about security. As we’ll say many times throughout the book, security is not a technological issue; it’s a business
