  • The development of film-coating processes Graham C.Cole SUMMARY To develop a film-coating process requires a laboratory test rig that can be scaled-up to meet production requirements. All the process parameters need to be optimized. A scheme is discussed here that provides an integrated computer-controlled system designed for aqueous film coating in a side-vented pan. A comparison is made of energy requirements of a column-coating system and a coating pan. All the major operational coating parameters can be measured and recorded under the overall control of a microcomputer.

  • This book is a revised edition of the Manual of basic techniques for a health laboratory (WHO, 1980), major revisions having been carried out by Dr K. Engbaek, Dr C.C. Heuck and Mr A.H. Moody. The revision was necessary because of new procedures and technology that have been developed since the previous edition and that have proved to be useful to small laboratories in developing countries. The procedures have been included in the relevant sections of the manual, and some obsolete procedures have been replaced by more up-to-date techniques....

  • Since the 1945 publication of Vannevar Bush’s Science—The Endless Frontier, the federal government has played the predominant role in supporting research and development (R&D) and in establishing public policies that affect science and technology (S&T) in the United States. That role remains vitally important today. Almost every major policy issue is influenced by scientific and technological information and expertise. There remains a clear and ongoing mandate for a cohesive set of federal policy and programs that both sustain R&D and promote the application of new knowledge....

The Board is charged to review the work only of ARL’s six directorates—and this excludes review of two key elements of the ARL organization that manage and support basic research: the Army Research Office and the Collaborative Technology Alliances. The advice provided focuses on technical rather than programmatic considerations. The Board is assisted by six standing National Research Council (NRC) panels, each of which focuses on a portion of the ARL program conducted by one of...

  • A newcomer to the scene, aerobic granulation is on its way to becoming the hot new technology for high-efficiency wastewater treatment. Thus far, intensive research has been conducted with regard to the understanding of the mechanism of aerobic granulation in sequencing batch reactors (SBR) and its application in treating a wide variety of municipal and industrial wastewater. This basic research has promoted the technology from laboratory-study all the way to the present pilot- and full-scale application.
