  • The third edition is divided into five parts. Part one describes some important basic concepts. Part two describes unit operations that take place at ambient temperature or involve minimum heating of foods. Part three includes operations that heat foods to preserve them or to alter their eating quality. Part four describes operations that remove heat from foods to extend their shelf life with minimal changes in nutritional quality or sensory characteristics. Part five describes post-processing operations, including packaging and distribution logistics. ...

  • The increasing global demand for processed foods has led to a greater prominence of the food industry, its specific needs and processing challenges. Consequently, in recent times the role of the engineer in the food industry has gained considerable prominence. In contrast to other more traditional processing industries, the raw materials or ingredients that are used tend to be of greater complexity in nature.

  • Automatic process control is concerned with maintaining process variables, temperatures, pressures, flows, compositions, and the like, at a desired operating value. As we shall see in the ensuing pages, processes are dynamic in nature. Changes are always occurring, and if actions are not taken, the important process variables— those related to safety, product quality, and production rates—will not achieve design conditions.

  • Just as human operators must be protected from extreme environments, so must the electronics that operate and control a functional system. When the environment proves too warm, the electronics must be insulated, refrigerated, or simply moved to cooler locations. This last option is sometimes very difficult, or impossible, and the perceived fragility of electronics must then be reconsidered. Vacuum-tube technology provides a historical example of this process.

  • A mathemalical model is presented that describes heat and moisture transfer during the holpressing of MDF. The model includes conduction of heat between the press platens and the central layer of the mattress, phase change of water from the adsorbed to the vapor state and the convective heat and mass transfer through the edges of the mattress. This approach results in a three-dimensional unsleady-state problem in which the properties of the wood fibers, water and the wood-water system are dependent on temperature, mattress moisture content and steam pressure.

  • Temperature measurement and control are vital in many industrial processes. Accurate control of the temperature is essential in nearly all chemical processes. In some applications, an accuracy of around 5-10~ may be acceptable. There are also some industrial applications which require better than 4-1 ~ accuracy.

  • The Rectisol process uses methanol as wash solvent. The methanol has many benefits, is globally available and is a low-cost washing agent. Furthermore, methanol is chemically and thermally stable and will not change its behavior and structure over a long service life. The Rectisol wash unit operates at temperatures below 0°C. To lower the feed gas temperatures, it is cooled against cold-product streams before entering the absorber tower. At the absorber tower, CO2 and H2S/COS are removed.

  • In contrast to our previous study (Barth & Marx, 2008) dealing with a currently decreasing research field (high-temperature superconductors) we analyzed here a topic which has raised a strongly increasing interest among researchers: research activities around carbon nanotubes (CNTs or NTs). Carbon nanotubes (often named only nanotubes) are graphite sheets rolled up into cylinders with diameters of the order of a few nanometers and up to some millimeters in length with at least one end capped with a hemisphere of the fullerene structure....

  • Making devices small has long had engineering, scientific, and aesthetic motivations. For example, John Harrison’s quest [1] to make a small (e.g., hand-sized) chronometer in the 1700s for nautical navigation was motivated by the desire to have an accurate time-keeping instrument that was insensitive to temperature, humidity, and motion. A small chronometer could meet these objectives and allow for multiple instruments on a ship for redundancy and error averaging. A number of technological firsts came from this work, such as the development of the roller bearing.

  • For simple applications, switching devices such as contactors or solid-state relays can be used to control electrical power. The electrical power in a process can be regulated by varying the ON and OFF times of these devices. But in many processes this provision of energy in large blocks will cause significant variations in the process output. As an example, it would not be possible to control lighting levels simply by using such two-state on/off switching elements. Neither could good temperature controllers be implemented in this way...

  • Silicon Carbide (SiC) and its polytypes have been a part of human civilization for a long time; the technical interest of this hard and stable compound has been realized in 1885 and 1892 by Cowless and Acheson for grinding and cutting purpose, leading to its manufacture on a large scale. The fundamental physical limitations of Si operation at higher temperature and power are the strongest motivations for switching to wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors such as SiC for these applications.

  • Although the fifth edition of this book has seen many author changes, our commitment and direction was clearly stated by, Dr. Helen Cox, in the preface to the fourth edition. We continue our commitment to providing a nursing focus to the process of nursing care. The fifth edition reflects seventeen new and six revised diagnoses accepted by NANDA in 2003 and 2005 and updated information in each chapter. The chapter formats remain the same. We have revised the integration of NANDA, NIC, and NOC terminology to assist with understanding their integration.

  • Cyanobacteria are a diverse group of unicellular and multicellular photosynthetic prokaryotes (Castenholz & Waterbury, 1989; Rippka, 1988); they are often referred to as blue-green algae, even though it is now known that they are not related to any of the other algal groups. Seasonal patterns of picoplankton abundance have been observed in many studies, revealing a strong relation with water temperature.
