When I was asked to contribute to the Beyond the Manual series, I was excited about the opportunity to present the information in a new format, skipping over the obvious and basic steps and addressing only that which the end user needs to know to learn what’s new and how to be proficient. I am grateful to Apress for giving me this opportunity. It was great working with the Apress team....

Thus, macroeconomic variables help us to locate fund managers with skills, but they do not indi- cate that these fund managers are merely using the macrovariables themselves to time their stock purchases....

To determine the source of differential performance, the standard approach partitions the R (γ) significant funds in two groups according to the sign of their estimated alphas. The first group contains the R+ (γ) funds with positive estimated alphas. We refer to them as the best funds. Similarly, the second group is formed with the R− (γ) funds with negative estimated alphas. We call them the worst funds.

For security purchases, this disclosure includes the amount by which the purchase price exceeded fair market value (or the two figures necessary to calculate the difference), in all but one case. 11 Accordingly, full reliance was put on these disclosed figures when they were available, and assumptions regarding the fair value or the value of support were not necessary in these cases. ...

All large, interconnected firms whose failure could threaten the stability of the system should be subject to consolidated supervision by the Federal Reserve, regardless of whether they own an insured depository institution. These firms should not be able to escape oversight of their risky activities by manipulating their legal structure.

If we take every conceivable environment into consideration, it is impossi- ble to benchmark SIEM systems. We can, however, set one baseline environment against which to benchmark and then include equations so that organizations can extrapolate their own benchmark requirements. That is the approach of this paper....
