  • The history of Computational Fluid Dynamics, or CFD for short,, started in the early 1970’s. Around that time, it became an acronym for a combination of physics, numerical mathematics, and, to some extent, computer sciences employed to simulate fluid flows. The beginning of CFD was triggered by the availability of increasingly more powerful mainframes and the advances in CFD are still tightly coupled to the evolution of computer technology.

  • The RNNs (Recurrent Neural Networks) are a general case of artificial neural networks where the connections are not feed-forward ones only. In RNNs, connections between units form directed cycles, providing an implicit internal memory. Those RNNs are adapted to problems dealing with signals evolving through time. Their internal memory gives them the ability to naturally take time into account. Valuable approximation results have been obtained for dynamical systems.

  • This book marks a major step forward in cognitive science, an effective way of thinking about minds and brains that isn’t just another computer metaphor. Many of us have been looking for such a step, but where would it come from? One promising possibility was dynamical systems theory, which indeed is basic to Michael Spivey’s argument here. Until now, however, dynamical systems have had little to say about genuinely cognitive achievements such as language, categorization, or thought.

  • Sediment Transport in Aquatic Environments is a book which covers a wide range of topics. The effective management of many aquatic environments, requires a detailed understanding of sediment dynamics. This has both environmental and economic implications, especially where there is any anthropogenic involvement. Numerical models are often the tool used for predicting the transport and fate of sediment movement in these situations, as they can estimate the various spatial and temporal fluxes.

  • Plant species that invade an alien area and outgrow the native vegetation, establishing and increasing their own territory, often lead to negative economic, environmental, and social impacts. Even native species can behave like invasive species by their exponential spread. Similarly, not all non-native species are invasive. Many alien invasive species, however, do threaten the health and integrity of our terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

  • Event recognition methods can be roughly categorized into model-based methods and appearance-based techniques. Model-based approaches relied on various models, includ- ing HMM [35], coupled HMM [3], and Dynamic Bayesian Network [33], to model the temporal evolution. The relationships among different body parts and regions are also modeled in [3], [35], in which object tracking needs to be conducted at first before model learning.

  • Our framework assumes that funds' sensitivities to passive assets are constant over time. One way of relaxing this assumption is to model these coe±cients as linear functions of state variables, as for example in Ferson and Schadt (1996) and Shanken (1990). In such a modi¯cation, passive asset returns scaled by the state variables can be viewed as returns on additional passive assets (dynamic passive strategies), and the approach developed here could be extended to such a setting. Another approach to dealing with temporal variation in parameters could employ data on fund holdings.
