Over the past few decades numerous studies have shown an alarming increase in the
concentration of atmospheric particular matter called aerosols resulting from a variety
of human activities, ranging from agricultural to combustion of fossil fuels. Besides
having serious impacts on the health of all living creatures, these particles can affect
planetary radiation budget. Consequences of this change include global temperature
shifts and the altering of atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns.
Extent of knowledge sharing: Related to the above problem is the question of how much knowledge is available
to the system during its query optimization process. In particular, the ﬁrst step in choosing a query evaluation strategy
is likely to be identifying which nodes have materialized views that can speed query processing. A simple technique
would be to use a centralized catalog of all available views and their locations, analogous to the central directory used
by Napster. Yet this model introduces a single point of failure and a potential scalability bottleneck.
The inclusion of a smooth function of time in a regression model introduces important sta-
tistical issues.We generally do not know precisely the complexity of the seasonal and long-term
trends in themortality time series or in the pollution time series. Therefore, a controversial issue
is determining how much smoothness we should allow for the smooth function of time. This
decision is critical because it determines the amount of residual temporal variation in mortality
that is available to estimate the air pollution effect.
A procedure was designed to assess individual exposure
to NO2 as a marker of outdoor air pollution considering
both spatial and temporal variations on exposure. Ambi-
ent NO2 concentrations for 93 sampling points covering
the study area were obtained using radial symmetry pas-
sive samplers (Radiello®, Fondazione Salvatore Maugeri,
Padua/Italy) which remained exposed for four sampling
periods of 7 days each. The campaigns took place in
April, June, and November 2004 and February 2005.
Our framework assumes that funds' sensitivities to passive assets are constant over time.
