This novel combination of the FEM and NS-FEM makes the best use of the upper bound property of the NS-FEM and the lower bound property of the standard FEM. This paper concentrates on applying directly the αFEM for solid mechanics to obtain the very accurate solutions with a suitable computational cost by using α = 0.6 for 2D problems and α = 0.7 for 3D problems.

As an essential element, selenium is present in enzymes from several families, including glutathione peroxidases, and is thought to exert anticarcinogenic properties. A remarkable feature of selenium consists of its ability to oxidize thiols under reducing conditions. Thus, one mode of action recently suggested is the oxidation of thiol groups of metal-lothionein, thereby providing zinc for essential reactions.

This report documents a collection of papers on a family of uniform strain tetrahedral finite elements and their connection to different element types. Also included in the report are two papers which address the general problem of connecting dissimilar meshes in two and three dimensions. Much of the work presented here was motivated by the development of the tetrahedral element described in the report 'A Suitable Low-Order, Eight-Node Tetrahedral Finite Element For Solids,' by S. W. Key (ital et al.), SAND98-0756, March 1998.
