  • We present Outilex, a generalist linguistic platform for text processing. The platform includes several modules implementing the main operations for text processing and is designed to use large-coverage Language Resources. These resources (dictionaries, grammars, annotated texts) are formatted into XML, in accordance with current standards. Evaluations on efficiency are given.

  • We have analyzed definitions from Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary using Sager's Linguistic String Parser and again using basic UNIX text processing utilities such as grep and awk. Tiffs paper evaluates both procedures, compares their results, and discusses possible future lines of research exploiting and combining their respective strengths. Introduction As natural language systems grow more sophisticated, they need larger and more d ~ l e d lexicons.

  • National and international standards committees are now discussing a two-byte code for multilingual information processing. This provides for 65,536 separate character and control codes, enough to make permanent code assiguments for all the charanters of ell national alphabets of the world, and also to include Chinese/Japanese characters. This paper discusses the kinds of flexibility required to handle both Roman and non-Roman alp.habets. It is crucial to separate information units (codes) from graphic forms, to maximize processing p ower, Comparing alphabets around the world, we find t.

  • Since facts or statements in a hedge or negated context typically appear as false positives, the proper handling of these language phenomena is of great importance in biomedical text mining. In this paper we demonstrate the importance of hedge classification experimentally in two real life scenarios, namely the ICD9-CM coding of radiology reports and gene name Entity Extraction from scientific texts. We analysed the major differences of speculative language in these tasks and developed a maxent-based solution for both the free text and scientific text processing tasks. ...

  • This tutorial gives an introduction to the fundamentals of Chinese language processing for text processing. Today, more and more Chinese information are available in electronic form and over the internet. Computer processing of Chinese text requires the understanding of both the language itself and the technology to handle them. This tutorial is targeted for both Chinese linguists who are interested in computational linguistics and computer scientists who are interested in research on processing Chinese. ...

  • Five years ago, Dwight Bolinger [1] w r o t e that efforts to r e p r e s e n t meaning had not yet made use of the insights of lexicography. The few substantial efforts, s u c h as those spearheaded by Olney [2,3], MelOCuk [4], S m i t h [5], a n d S i m m o n s [6,7], made some progress, but never came to fruition. Today, lexicography and its products, the dictionaries, remain an untapped resource of uncertain value. Indeed, many who have analyzed the contents of a dictionary...

  • Importance evaluation is one of the most challenging problems in the field of text processing. In the paper we focus on the notion of importance from a computational standpoint, and we propose a procedural, rule-based approach to importance evaluation. T h i s novel approach is supported by a prototype experimental system, called importance evaluator, that can deal with descriptive texts taken from computer science l i t e r a t u r e on operating systems. The evaluator relies on a set of importance rules that are used to assign importance values to the different parts...

  • This book is a final year undergraduate text on stochastic processes, a tool used widely by statisticians and researchers working, for example, in the mathematics of finance. The book will give a detailed treatment of conditional expectation and probability, a topic which is essential as a tool for stochastic processes. Although the book is a final year text, the authors have chosen to use exercises as the main means of explanation for the various topics, hence the course has a strong self-study element.
