  • Slang and Society Slang derives much of its power from the fact that it is clandestine, forbidden or generally disapproved of. So what happens once it is accepted, even in some cases embraced and promoted by ‘mainstream’ society? Not long ago the Oxford English Dictionary characterised slang as ‘low and disreputable’; in the late 1970s the pioneering sociolinguist Michael Halliday used the phrase ‘anti-language’ in his study of the speech of criminals and marginals. For him, theirs was an interestingly ‘pathological’ form of language.

  • The explosive growth in geographical information systems (GIS) in the last decade has resulted in considerable debate about which particular definition most accurately describes the activities of GIS research, and whether these diverse activities constitute a science of geographic information (Rhind et al., 1991). There is now widespread acceptance in the research community that the strengths of GIS lie in its diversity and the research area has correspondingly evolved to encompass an increasing range of geographical and spatially oriented analytical and modelling processes.

  • This paper discusses the consequences of allowing discontinuous constituents in syntactic representions and phrase-structure rules, and the resulting complications for a standard parser of phrase-structure grammar. It is argued, first, that discontinuous constituents seem inevitable in a phrase-structure grammar which is acceptable from a semantic point of view. It is shown that tree-like constituent structures with discontinuities can be given a precise definition which makes them just as acceptable for syntactic representation as ordinary trees.
