  • Surveying a vast theory like Teichmüller theory is like surveying a land, and the various chapters in this Handbook are like a collection of maps forming an atlas: some of them give a very general overview of the field, others give a detailed view of some crowded area, and others are more focussed on interesting details. There are intersections between the chapters, and these intersections are necessary.

  • We characterize precisely the possible rate of decay of the anti-analytic half of a trigonometric series converging to zero almost everywhere. 1. Introduction 1.1. In 1916, D. E. Menshov constructed an example of a nontrivial trigonometric series on the circle T ∞ (1) n=−∞ c(n)eint which converges to zero almost everywhere (a.e.). Such series are called nullseries. This result was the origin of the modern theory of uniqueness in Fourier analysis, see [Z59], [B64], [KL87], [KS94]. Clearly for such a series |c(n)|2 = ∞.

  • The purpose of this chapter is largely to serve as an accessible introduction or a refresher of basic notions regarding analytic functions. We start by recalling the elementary theory of functions and their singularities in a style tuned to the needs of analytic combinatorics. Cauchy’s integral formula expresses coefficients of analytic functions as contour integrals. Suitable uses of Cauchy’s integral formula then make it possible to estimate such coefficients by suitably selecting an appropriate contour of integration.

  • This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the underlying theory, design techniques and analytical tools of wireless communications, focusing primarily on the core principles of wireless system design. The book begins with an overview of wireless systems and standards. The characteristics of the wireless channel are then described, including their fundamental capacity limits. Various modulation, coding, and signal processing schemes are then discussed in detail, including state-of-the-art adaptive modulation, multicarrier, spread spectrum, and multiple antenna techniques....

  • The process of analyte retention in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) involves many different aspects of molecular behavior and interactions in condensed media in a dynamic interfacial system. Molecular diffusion in the eluent flow with complex flow dynamics in a bimodal porous space is only one of many complex processes responsible for broadening of the chromatographic zone.

  • Great efficiencies have been achieved in the drug discovery process as a result of technological advances in target identification, high-throughput screening, high-throughput organic synthesis, just-in-time in vitro ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion), and early pharmacokinetic screening of drug leads. These advances, spanning target selection all the way through to clinical candidate selection, have placed greater and greater demands on the analytical community to develop robust high-throughput methods.

  • The most widely used analytical separation technique for the qualitative and quantitative determination of chemical mixtures in solution in the pharmaceutical industry is high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). However, conventional detectors used to monitor the separation, such as UV, refractive index, fluorescence, and radioactive detectors, provide limited information on the molecular structure of the components of the mixture. Mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) are the primary analytical techniques that provide structural information on the analytes.

  • Analog Optical Links presents the basis for the design of analog links. Following an introductory chapter, there is a chapter devoted to the development of the small signal models for common electro-optical components used in both direct and external modulation. However, this is not a device book, so the theory of their operation is discussed only insofar as it is helpful in understanding the small signal models that result. These device models are then combined to form a complete link.

  • The Analytical Instrumentation Handbook serves as a guide for workers in analytical chemistry, who need a starting place for information about a specific instrumental technique, either as a basic introduction to it or as a means of finding leading references dealing with theory and methodology for an instrumental technique. The chapters which appeared in the second edition have been thoroughly expanded and updated, with concepts, applications, and key references to the recent literature.

  • Concluding Remarks. Extreme changes in selectivity and reversal of elution order of phenolic isomeric compounds were obtained after changing either the pH of the mobile phase, the temperature of the system, or the type of organic eluent employed. Changes in the analyte ionization state were observed upon increasing the acetonitrile composition as well as the temperature. Method development for ionizable analytes requires a judicious choice of the mobile-phase conditions and system parameters in order to perform the analysis of the compounds in their desired ionization state. ...

  • Articles in this volume are based on talks given at the Gauss-Dirichlet Conference held on June 20-24, 2005. The conference commemorated the 150th anniversary of the death of C.-F. Gauss and the 200th anniversary of the birth of J.-L. Dirichlet. The volume begins with a definitive summary of the life and work of Dirichlet and continues with thirteen papers by leading experts on research topics of current interest in number theory that were directly influenced by Gauss and Dirichlet.

  • Against expectations that the turn away fromstate socialismwould initiate aturnaway from Marxist thought, recent years have seen a resurgence of interest inMarxism and its reassessment by a new generation of theorists. This book pursues that interest with specific reference to international law. It presents a sustained and ground-breaking exploration of the pertinence of Marxist ideas, concepts and analytical practices for international legal enquiry from a range of angles.

  • The extent to which an organic molecule absorbs electromagnetic radiation in the ultraviolet region (UV light) depends on the structure of the molecule. Generally, molecules that contain one single double bond absorb weakly in the UV region. However, if multiple double bonds are present in a molecule and they are conjugated, the molecule absorbs more strongly and the absorbance is shifted to longer wavelengths. The pH of the mobile-phase effects the ionization of ionogenic solutes and also the analyte UV response.

  • HE ADDISON-WESLEY SERIES on Organization Development is legendary in the Organizational Development field and the basis for the change field. Its impact on the field of OD, and on the authors in particular, was and still is profound. This new Jossey-Bass Series is the 21st-Century version of the original theory and practice series. The three editors of the earlier books were Edgar Schein, Warren Bennis, and the late Richard Beckhard—true pioneers, founders, and “godfathers” of the field.

  • What would science be without measurement, and what would social science be without social measurement? Social measurement belongs to the widely accepted and fruitful stream of the empirical-analytic approach. Statistics and research methodology play a central role, and it is difficult to ascertain precisely when it all started in the social sciences. An important subfield of social measurement is the quantification of human behavior—that is, using measurement instruments of which educational and psychological tests are the most prominent representatives.

  • This is the eight book of examples from the Theory of Probability. In general, this topic is not my favourite, but thanks to my former colleague, Ole Jørsboe, I somehow managed to get an idea of what it is all about. We shall, however, in this volume deal with some topics which are closer to my own mathematical fields. The prerequisites for the topics can e.g. be found in the Ventus: Calculus 2 series and the Ventus: Complex Function Theory series, and all the previous Ventus: Probability c1-c6. Unfortunately errors cannot be avoided in a first edition of a work of this type.

  • A basic result in the theory of holomorphic functions of several complex variables is the following special case of the work of H. Cartan on the sheaf cohomology on Stein domains ([10], or see [14] or [16] for more modern treatments). Theorem 1.1. If V is an analytic variety in a domain of holomorphy Ω and if f is a holomorphic function on V , then there is a holomorphic function g in Ω such that g = f on V . The subject of this paper concerns an add-on to the structure considered in Theorem 1.1 which...
