  • The credit derivatives market is booming and, for the first time, expanding into the banking sector which previously has had very little exposure to quantitative modeling. This phenomenon has forced a large number of professionals to confront this issue for the first time. Credit Derivatives Pricing Models provides an extremely comprehensive overview of the most current areas in credit risk modeling as applied to the pricing of credit derivatives.

  • Modeling Hydrologic Change: Statistical Methods is about modeling systems where change has affected data that will be used to calibrate and test models of the systems and where models will be used to forecast system responses after change occurs. The focus is not on the hydrology. Instead, hydrology serves as the discipline from which the applications are drawn to illustrate the principles of modeling and the detection of change. All four elements of the modeling process are discussed: conceptualization, formulation, calibration, and verification.

  • If you’re looking to use the single-page application model to build your site’s frontend, Backbone.js is an ideal framework for the job. This practical guide provides all the information you need to create structured JavaScript applications using Backbone.js and its unique flavor of the model-view-controller (MVC) architecture. You’ll start with the essentials of Backbone’s models, views, collections, and routers, and then dive into methods for building RESTful applications with modern technology stacks....

  • One of the most important advancements in recent social science research (including applied social sciences and public policy) has been the application of quantitative or computational methods in studying the complex human or social systems. Research centers in computational social sciences have flourished on major university campuses. Among others, the University of Chicago, University of Washington, UCLA, and George Mason University have all established such a center recently to promote the multidisciplinary research related to social issues....

  • Chapter 10. RDF, RDF Tools, and the Content Model-P1 Chapter 9 introduced the Resource Description Framework (RDF) as the basis for building display data in the interface, where XUL templates take RDF-based data and transform it into regular widgets. But RDF is used in many other more subtle ways in Mozilla. In fact, it is the technology Mozilla uses for much of its own internal data handling and manipulation.

  • Although many other models of concurrent and distributed systems have been developed since the introduction in 1964 Petri nets are still an essential model for concurrent systems with respect to both the theory and the applications. The main attraction of Petri nets is the way in which the basic aspects of concurrent systems are captured both conceptually and mathematically. The intuitively appealing graphical notation makes Petri nets the model of choice in many applications.

  • The primary duties of the transport layer, Layer 4 of the OSI model, are to transport and regulate the flow of information from the source to the destination, reliably and accurately. End-to-end control and reliability are provided by sliding windows, sequencing numbers, and acknowledgments To understand reliability and flow control, think of someone who studies a foreign language for one year and then they visit the country where that language is used.

Among these are the Cubic Plus Association Equation of State (CPA EoS) and the Perturbed Chain Statistical Association Fluid Theory (PC-SAFT). These two advanced models are already in widespread use in industry and academia, especially within the oil and gas, chemical and polymer industries....

  • This paper presents a method to develop a class of variable memory Markov models that have higher memory capacity than traditional (uniform memory) Markov models. The structure of the variable memory models is induced from a manually annotated corpus through a decision tree learning algorithm. A series of comparative experiments show the resulting models outperform uniform memory Markov models in a part-of-speech tagging task.

  • Silverlight is a framework for building rich, browser-hosted applications that run on a variety of operating systems. Silverlight works its magic through a browser plug-in. When you surf to a web page that includes Silverlight content, this browser plug-in runs, executes the code, and renders that content in a specifically designated region of the page. The important part is that the Silverlight plug-in provides a richer environment than the traditional blend of HTML and JavaScript that powers ordinary web pages.

  • The applicability of many current information extraction techniques is severely limited by the need for supervised training data. We demonstrate that for certain field structured extraction tasks, such as classified advertisements and bibliographic citations, small amounts of prior knowledge can be used to learn effective models in a primarily unsupervised fashion. Although hidden Markov models (HMMs) provide a suitable generative model for field structured text, general unsupervised HMM learning fails to learn useful structure in either of our domains.
